Sean's P.O.V
"We're people you can talk to. It's okay," Breanna said.
Tears fell down my cheeks. "I-I don't know where to begin," I said.
"Begin anywhere you'd like, dear boy. We have all the time in the world," James said.
I nodded. "When I was ten, I met my best friend Mikey. We met when he transferred schools and we immediately got along. We spent a lot of time together and eventually became inseparable. When Sophomore year started, we were excited to get our licenses so we could drive around and listen to music. When we did get our licenses, Mikey got this really cool Jeep Wrangler. We went on rides nearly every night and got to have deep conversations while looking at the stars. One night after he drove me home, we sat in my driveway for a bit. After talking for a few minutes, he admitted that he was gay. The poor guy was crying and kept saying how he didn't want to admit it to me because he thought I wouldn't like him because he thought I was religious. I told him that he was being ridiculous and I would never judge someone for who they loved. I also told him that I loved him. And then he kissed me. I pulled away after a few seconds, but it was too late. My mother had seen us and she dragged me out of the car and into the house. My dad threatened Mikey with a shotgun so Mikey took off. Eli wasn't home and my parents made me promise that I wouldn't tell him or anybody about what just happened. Then they told me to go to my room. That night I heard them on the phone with our pastor Jeff. They signed me up for-" I began, tears falling out of my eyes. I let out a sob.
Breanna wiped her eyes with her sleeve. She was crying. "Continue," she choked out.
"They signed me up for a camp where they turn gay kids straight. I'm not even gay. That summer they took me away and locked me in a small, white room with just a bed and a desk. It was like an asylum but for gay kids. And those are illegal, so it was all underground and nobody in the town knew about it except the religious freaks and the church workers. They beat me and screamed religious sayings and words at me. They treated me like a dog. And all I could do was sit there and take it. I missed my family and friends like crazy. And not once did my parents come to visit. They told me that my brother was at a different camp, so I never expected him to show up. Mikey tried to get in a few times, but they spat homophobic slurs at him and told him to go away. When he tried to get in for the third time, I saw him through the window and he waved at me. I waved back and watched as my best friend left in his Jeep Wrangler. That was the last time I ever saw him. I don't know where he went or what he's doing, but I hope he's okay," I explained.
Breanna got up from her seat and hugged me. "That is the first background story to make me cry. I'm so sorry that happened to you," she said.
I smiled. "It's okay. It isn't your fault," I said.
James was quiet. He rubbed his eyes.
"James? Are you okay?" She asked.
"Yes. I'm quite alright. Just irritated and upset," he responded.
"I know. It's a horrible story," Breanna said.
"I am so baffled that there are people in this world that treat homosexuals in that manner. I'm from the 1920s and I couldn't care less what people do with their lives if I'm quite honest," James said.
