"Seokjin?" I murmured groggily, rubbing my eyes sleepily.
I turned on my phone and almost jumped when I saw the time.
"Shit it's almost ten. How long was I out? I swear I was working," I groaned.
Seokjin gave me an amused gaze, "No Detective Hwang you were not working. It was eight o'clock and you and I were having a conversation about our case, and ten seconds later I hear snores. Well no worries, I did the work like always, so go home."
I rolled my eyes. I wished he would drop the attitude just once.
"You know, no one cares for the brooders. I get you're trying to go for that, 'I've been through some shit' look but it is highly annoying and my patience is wearing thin with you old man," I hissed.
He raised an eyebrow, "Old man? I'm not that old.
I'm a ninety-two born.""And I'm ninety-six so therefore you're old," I retorted.
He scoffed, "No wonder you're so childish."
I seriously was about to slap a handsome guy one the face.
But just as I was about to make a snide remark back, my stomach growled, loudly.
I hid my face in my hands in utter embarrassment. Here I was trying to win an argument, and my stomach had to go and ruin it for me.
And then like a sound from heaven, or a windshield wiper, I heard Seokjin laugh. Genuinely. It was short, but it was sweet and magnificent. He actually sounded happy and not like he was either living in a fanfiction or was some Korean version of Bruce Wayne.
"So you do laugh. And it sounds like a fricken windshield wiper but whatever," I hummed, my mood brightened thanks to Seokjin's slip up.
He quickly covered his face, his ears turning red from the sudden attention.
I looked at Seokjin, an amused smirk playing on my lips, "I'm assuming you haven't eaten anything either."
Seokjin rolled his eyes, "I wonder what gave off that idea. Speaking of which, I'm famished so goodnight."
"Wait!" I called.
He stopped in his tracks, looking expectantly at me.
"Would you maybe want to go get a late dinner together? Umm and we can talk about the case obviously," I added quickly.
Seokjin gave an amused smirk, "Right. Work. Ahh, I guess I could accompany you."
A small smile tugged at his lips.
Well this was a development. And a welcome one at that.
I grabbed my coat, giving him a small smile, "Cool. Let's go so I can fill my belly."
I got in my car and started driving, checking my rearview mirror to make sure that Seokjin was following me. Luckily, he hadn't ditched yet. Though I was giving it ten minutes before he bounced on me.
I pulled into an old fashioned diner that I came to often, happy to see Seokjin was still there. Though he was wearing a rather annoyed scowl.
"I thought you were gonna bring us somewhere nice," he huffed.
"Have respect for the finer things in life Detective Kim. You learn a lot about people by going about the smaller pleasures that everyone can enjoy," I chided.
We sat in a booth, awkward silence filling the air as we quietly looked over the menu.
If I was being honest, I had no idea what half the stuff on the menu tasted like. Or rather I didn't remember. It still baffled me even now how little about the world I suddenly knew. Yet I had to keep up a farce that I knew and understood everything.
