Epilogue
“Hey! You need a ride?” Steve’s voice interrupted my thoughts on my walk to school.
“Don’t you have work?” I replied, giving him a confused look.
“Nah, the shops running slow. Not as many cars out here that need fixing. Plus I figured you would like a ride to your first day at a new school.” He gave me a smile. “Where is Dean anyways? I figured him and dufus would give you a ride.” He was driving next to me slowly as I walked.
I opened the door with a sigh before climbing in and buckling myself in. “They were running late. Slept in or something. I don’t know, he just said he’d meet me at school.” I paused, “I really need a new car.”
“Only four more months. Or at least that’s what your dad says for now.”
I rolled my eyes, but did not bother to respond. A few minutes later something crossed my mind, “Do you ever wonder where he might be?”
“Who- Oh. Not really. I mean, he’s not here, and we’re not in Miami anymore. So he shouldn’t bother you anymore.” Steve looked away from the road for a second to give me an assuring smile before looking back out the windshield.
“Yeah, I know. That was the whole point of moving. But still.” I started to think about how a week after I had been released from the hospital – and my car had been blown to pieces – we had all moved. Including Steve, Dean and Dean’s friend. (The one from the very beginning in case you guys forgot.) I felt bad that they were just leaving their lives to come with me.
Steve insisted that I was the only thing he cared about in his life, it wasn’t like he had any family or anything to really worry about. So he sold his garage, and found a new one where we had moved to. The sunny hills of California.
Dean also because life was more interesting with me around. I rolled by eyes at that, and was pretty sure he was secretly worried about leaving me. Just in case. But apparently there was not anything I could do to change their minds. They all wanted to come.
Well, I am not sure about Dean’s friend but he and Dean were a package deal and they stuck together. Turns they had known each other since birth and were practically brothers.
The only thing that I did not like about this situation was the fact that my dad had said that I could not get a new car. At least for a few months, four for now depending on my behavior. Yeah, I was still getting in trouble after being in a coma for two months. Have to love my dad.
But I did understand where he was coming from, and that he felt bad saying I could not replace my car. Not even with an ancient one that did not go over sixty miles per hour.
But anyways, after the ‘police’ man had attacked us in the hospital and ran, the actual police searched for him. They are still looking, but it’s been a few weeks so they do not believe that they will find him. But none the less, there are still ‘wanted’ posters with his face floating around.
For now, I guess I can just hope that he does not come back.
“Alright, we’re here.” Steve looked over to me, “Have a good day. And don’t get in trouble.” He gave me a stern look.
“Thanks dad.” I saluted him before getting out of the car and looking at my school. It was small, especially compared to my last on in Miami, with about six hundred kids total.
I guess this means I also have to just hope that I can make it through this school without any problems also.
