Smash!
"Damn it!"
The sound of a shattering bowl immediately brought the three mom friends to their feet. While it wasn't uncommon for there to be accidents in the kitchen, they still needed to make sure no one was hurt and all the glass was swept up to prevent other possible injuries. The first to arrive was Maicee, who was just in the living room grading her students' monologues when she heard the glass shatter. Abby was the next to arrive, as her room was the closest to the kitchen compared to everyone else's. She had also been grading papers for her students, but her assignment had instead been an essay on eco-friendly energy sources. Both she and Maicee worked at the same high school and carpooled together every morning. The last to arrive at the scene was Yas, her face remaining free from expression as she leaned against the doorway.
Atlas and Eddie were standing in the kitchen with the shattered glass between them. Both of them looked at three who came to help, expressions of fear evident on their faces.
"What happened here?" Abby's soft tone made them relax a bit as Maicee went to get the broom from the pantry. Eddie shrugged, leaving Atlas to answer.
"Uh, we were both hungry for cereal and there was only one bowl left, so... Um..." Atlas trailed off, looking a bit embarrassed.
"Y'all really fought over a bowl when the rest were in the dishwasher? All you had to do was clean one, dear." Abby gave a soft giggle and a sympathetic smile as Maicee began to smack their feet with the broom, effectively ushering them both out of the kitchen. Atlas let out a small yelp at the touch of the bristles.
"Well, that's what you get for fighting over a bowl! Gremlins, both of you." Maicee snorted as she collected the glass. Her pink hair was up in two messy buns which bobbed around as she moved.
"Hey, it isn't my fault, dude. I had the bowl and Atlas tried to take it," Eddie explained, causing Atlas' neck to snap over to look at him.
"Oh hell no, I called dibs before you even touched it! Everyone knows the rule!" Atlas exclaimed. Eddie scoffed at him, sticking his tongue out.
"You little bitch-" Eddie bolted from the kitchen, Atlas following in hot pursuit, shouting expletives along the way. Abby chuckled, rolling her eyes at the two of them. They always managed to try to kill each other for the silliest of reasons. Maicee dumped the shards of porcelain glass into the trash, scanning to see if she missed anything before concluding her work was good.
"Well, that was an eventful break, wasn't it?" Abby joked. Maicee scoffed and chuckled, nodding in agreement.
"Tell me about it. I wasn't sure if someone died or someone was about to die!" Abby and Maicee smiled, looking around the kitchen with fondness. So many memories of crazy holiday meals, sentimental actions, and horrible pranks by some of the family happened here that at this point it was second to only the living room as the most chaotic room in the house. And throughout all of it, the kitchen floor had not been scuffed or scratched once, which was amazing because Yas would probably kill them herself.
Speaking of her...
Yas was still leaning against the doorway, her eyes now closed and her arms still crossed against her chest. Abby looked at Maicee, who gave a small shrug.
"Yaya dear?" Abby walked over, standing where the Latinx's point of view would be if her eyes were open. Usually, she was a pretty light sleeper when she did sleep, but today she gave no response.
