I pick up Maoie with my left hand and tuck the library books under my right elbow. It's a quiet, peaceful day. The sun is shining brightly outside and I hear a soft rustle of leaves from the backyard.
A perfect day to work my ass off while unpacking these boxes.
Not.
I'm tired as it is and I'm so not in the mood to organise anything. The boxes are lying around haphazardly. I stub my toe and curse loudly. My voice echoes around the house, making me flinch. I press down on my toe in an attempt to make the pain go away. Maoie is on the floor now, sniffing the books that I dropped. I pick them up again and start towards my earlier destination - the kitchen. Maoie follows me, happily wagging his tail in the air. We haven't even been here for two days and he has already found his favourite hang out place.
I look through the grocery bag to find something to eat. There's a packet of cup noodles and I take it out, dropping the books again in the process. Why did I have to be so clumsy?
I pick up the books again, tucking the bookmarks in and throw them on the table with a soft thud.
Any sound I make echoes around the room and it's starting to get irritating. Why is it so fucking quiet? This neighbourhood is so dead, I swear to god.
There isn't any other sound except for my breathing and an occasional bark from Maoie, not even from outside.
Maybe it's the calm before a storm.
I roll my eyes at no one in particular and heat up some water in a pan for the noodles. While they get ready, I open my travelling bag and change into a pair of shorts and a tank top. I really need to go grocery shopping today. We can't survive off of cup noodles, right? Okay, maybe I can but Maoie certainly can't.
I quickly eat the noodles and feed a couple of biscuits to Maoie. He's so small and adorable. I tickle him behind his ears and he gives a soft bark of joy. He wants to play but we don't really have the time so I put him on a leash and we're on our way to the market. He just can't get used to the leash but I don't want him to get lost in a new city. He's all I have here.
