(Ferryn's P.O.V.)
After lunch I sat down on the couch in the living room to think. I just can't help but think about if it could work. If we go back in time and get the stones we bring them here and use them and take them back. It would work. Well if we could make time traveling work. I haven't done serious thinking like this in a while. I walk over to Dad's computer table and bring up a diagram. I start to line up the things Scott had talked about. I just needed to see it all to get my mind wrapped around it all. I need a refresher on quantum theory.
"What are you looking at?" Dad asks, scaring me. I take a breath and turn back to the computer.
"Quantum theory." I say pointing to something I had found that was written by Hank Pim.
"Are you really thinking about time travel?" He asks sitting down on the couch.
"Think about it Dad. It could work. Hank Pim was the man who made Scott's suit. He made this stuff that could shrink you down to the quantum realm, he just couldn't quite get you back. If we can figure out how to make it back safely and navigate down there, it could work." I explain.
"I know, I've been thinking about it too." He says, sitting further back on the couch. "But there are too many things that could go wrong. We send someone in and they could get lost or get killed in the past, or even screw with something and mess things up now."
"Yeah, but it could go right. We could go back and get the stones. We'll bring them back here and use them to bring everyone back and then take the stones right back. We could get him back!" I say getting excited and then realizing what I said. "We could get everyone back." I correct myself. He looks at me with a sad look in his eyes. He takes a second and rubs his face, slightly frustrated.
"Alright." He says, standing up. "Friday, let's run some simulations."
-----hours later-----
Simulation after simulation nothing has worked. We got close a few times but the loop never connected. The simulation shows that we could get into the quantum realm and use it to get back in time but the sim would get lost in time. We have adjusted a million things and tried what felt like a thousand variables.
"Alright, I'd like to run one last sim before we pack it in for the night." Dad said for the fourth time tonight. He'll say that this will be the last one and then we'll get closer and run a few more. I watch Dad mess with the hologram of the test and start the simulation processing. Dad and I had given up at this point. I was laying on the couch and he was eating snacks while we waited for Friday to process things. I watched the little lines float around the hologram of the circle. And then they connected. Dad froze and fell back into his seat. I sat up staring at the model. It worked. I just can't believe it.
"Shit!" Dad exclaims, throwing his arms into the air. I just sat, staring at the model with my jaw basically on the floor.
"Shit." A little voice came from the stairs. Dad and I both turn to see Morgan watching us. I laugh happily and Dad hushes her.
"What are you doing up, little miss?" Dad asks her.
"Shit." She says again.
"Nope, we don't say that. Only Mommy says that word. She coined it. It belongs to her." Dad explains and I go over to sit next to her.
"What are you doing up?" Morgan asks and I pick her up to sit her in my lap.
"Cause I've got some important shit going on here." Dad exclaims and Morgan makes a face at him. I mock gasp at his choice of words and it makes Morgan laugh. "I've got something on my mind." He explains.
"Was it juice pops?" She asks, smiling.
"It was." Dad nods. "And that's extortion. That's a word." Dad says, taking Morgan out of my lap and walks to the kitchen. I stay and watch the simulation one more time, just making sure it was real. I walk to the kitchen and get a juice pop for myself and go sit in the living room. Pepper was sitting on the couch.
"Those juice pops are for Morgan, you know. " Pepper says, putting down her book. I just take a bite out of the pop in response. She rolls her eyes at me. "I thought you were headed back to the city tonight."
"Oh, crap. I was." I say and run to go get my phone. I had left it on a charger and forgot about it. I picked it up to see several missed texts and calls from Harley. I called Harley.
"I'm so sorry. I completely lost track of time." I say quickly as soon as he picks up.
"Ferryn, I was worried. You said you'd be home tonight." He says and I can hear the worry in his voice.
"I'm so sorry. Dad and I started working on this thing and my phone was on a charger and time just flies when I'm working." I apologize and I hear him sigh.
"It's ok. I just wish you would have called. Are you gonna come home still?" He asks. I hadn't thought about that. I really want to keep working on this.
"Um, probably not." I say slowly. "Dad and I are trying to figure out something and it's starting to work and I'm just really excited about it."
"What are you guys working on?" He asked and I could hear he didn't really mean it.
"I'm sorry, Harley. I know you wanted me to be home this weekend. But what we are working on could be really good." I say smiling. "I'll be home, soon. I just need to work on this."
"It's ok." He paused, but I still felt really bad. "That fort better be really good." He says, joking.
"Of course it will be. I'll make it up to you, I promise."
"Ok. goodnight, Ferryn. I love you." He says.
"Goodnight, love you too." I say and hang up.
"Was that Harley?" Dad asks as he walks back into the room.
"I was supposed to go back to the city tonight." I sigh and take another bit of my juice pop.
"I'd say figuring out time travel is a pretty good excuse."
"I didn't tell him that." I say, not sure why I didn't. He'd be excited too. He'd get his mom and sister back if we figure it out. "Why didn't I tell him that?" I ask, frustrated at myself.
"It's fine kid. You were just caught up in the moment, you just forgot." Dad said, sitting next to me.
"I'm scared things aren't going too well for us." I say, pulling my legs up on the couch. "He's amazing and too good for me. I don't deserve him."
"That isn't true, you are too good for him if anything. He really loves you, Ferryn. Just talk to him. I think if you two just talk about what you are feeling he'll do whatever he can to make you feel better. Now, go get some sleep. We still have plenty of work to do before we can actually make this time heist work. Oh, and not to brag but Magoona loves me 3000." He says as I get up.
"Well I made her a fort so I'm sure she loves me 5000." I say crossing my arms. He laughs and stands up too.
"Nah, I think she said something like 600 for you." Dad jokes. "Night, short stack." He says hugging me.
"Night Dad. I love you 3000." I laugh and he rolls his eyes.
"Well, I love you , 4000." Dad one ups me and I go to one up him again. "No, I get the last word, it's my house. Go to bed." Dad says and starts to guide me to the door. I walk over to my smaller house and smile. I love my little house. Over the last few years it has been a nice place to escape to. I can sit and watch Netflix and not worry about what happened outside that door. My room here is probably one of my favorite places. I pick up my phone and think about calling Harley again. He's probably sleeping by now, he has work in the morning. I sent emails to parents of kids that I tutor, telling them that I would be taking this week off. I have no clue how long all this time travel stuff was going to take. Tomorrow we are gonna start on the actual navigation device so we don't get lost. We also might need some type of suit like ant dude's so we don't get hurt in the shrinking process. But for now, I'm gonna watch a movie and go to sleep.
