"Wait really? That's great" I hugged him when he told me. Although I was a bit cynical as to whether this was real or not, seeing as they invited him only after seeing the clips of his act and making fun of him. Either way I didn't want to ruin Arthur's happiness so I played along.
He was excited to say the least. All of a sudden he grabbed a pillow and threw it at my head. "You did not just do that" I giggled before picking another pillow up and hitting him back.
We ended up in a pillow fight which turned into play fighting. He was definitely stronger than I anticipated, however not strong enough to take me down.I jumped off the bed and ran round the side. "Come here" I heard Arthur call after me. We were both laughing as he grabbed me and pulled me back onto the bed.
Panting, we stopped and layed down beside one another, catching our breath. "You're feisty" He smirked before pulling my head to his and kissing me.
"Hey listen, I need to go out for a bit but I'll ring you when I can" Arthur sat up and turned back to me. "I love you" He kissed me before standing up.
"I love you too, be safe" I replied as he walked out the door.Once I had caught my breath and was calm again I began making food. I didn't have much left as I didn't have much money since getting fired. I really did need to get a job.
Food being eaten, I left my apartment to go look for a job. I didn't want to look for one as I was beginning to like the freedom but I knew I needed the money.
Outside it was cold and windy. I had already looked at about 10 different shops and diners but none of them were recruiting any staff.By the time I had gone round the entire streets it had gotten dark. The coldness was picking up and I could feel spits of rain falling down. I didn't want to go home yet, I still had a few streets left to look at.
"Hello, I'm looking for a job are you needing any help?" I had entered a little pharmacy shop at the end of the street I was in.
The man behind the counter stared me up and down before giving me a wink.
"Sure pretty thing, you could work in the back with me" He cocked his head slightly giving me a creepy grin before signalling for me to follow him.
I did not like the look of him. He had greasy black hair and a crooked nose that almost covered the horrendous bush above his lip. There was a scar above his left eye that looked old and scabby. As we entered the storage room he walked up to me, putting a hand to my face. "So you could help me stock up and unpack these boxes" He whispered in my ear as his other hand touched my thigh. I flinched and moved my leg away. I was no where near comfortable.
Raindrops the size of dimes began pelting down as the man inched closer to me. "You can stay the night with me so you're out of the rain darling" He placed his hand on my leg once again, this time moving further up.
I slapped it away as I stood up."No thanks I'll be fine. I don't want the job either" I stormed out of the shop and into the pouring rain.
The night seemed to sound only of water as I fought against the weather trying to get home.
---------------------------------I was soaked as I made it under the shelter of my apartment. I had begrudgingly began climbing the stairs until I reached my door.
That's funny, I could've sworn I locked my door before I left. My head wasn't in the right state so I didn't think anything of it. I was still trying to get the image of that man out.
As I took of my jacket and went to get a towel, I walked back into the living room and stopped dead almost tripping over. I let out a gasp as I stared at Arthur sitting on my sofa. Head doubled over.
He was sopping wet so he couldn't have been here long, his hair was all tangled and his coat looked heavy with water.
"A-Arthur, it's me, how d-did you- are you alright?" I didn't have a clue what to say to him. There was a long silence before I heard him grumble under his breath. "I had a bad day"."Why what happened what's wrong" I was getting worried. He slammed a worn looking book on the table "he was telling the truth".
I walked over to him and sat down. As I looked through the files I was astounded at what I read.
Penny Fleck's file was full of horrific cases. She reportedly had extremely bizarre behavior, there was headlines about physical abuse. Then I saw it.
The adoption papers. I covered my mouth as I read through it. Arthur had been abandoned as a child.Penny had supposedly stood by as her boyfriend repeatedly abused Arthur and battered her.
'A house of terror for a mother and her son' one headline wrote. One interviewer that was written down had said this; "Penny, your son was found tied to a radiator in your filthy apartment, malnourished with multiple bruises across his body and severe trauma to his head". I couldn't believe what I was reading. I didn't want to believe it. The fact Arthur too, knew nothing about this was heartbreaking. I never imagined someone as sweet and caring as Penny could do this.
I sat the files down and stood up. As I did, Arthur had lifted his head to stare at me.
Slowly he raised his hand in the shape of gun and placed it against his head.He pulled the trigger.
