The next morning I heard shouting from below my window. People were on their way to the protest outside Wayne Hall.
Seeing as I has nothing better to do, I decided to join in. My main motive was to find Arthur.

On the way I found a spare clown mask laying on the ground. It was identical to the others and looked clean. I put it on and joined the group.
I looked around the group but couldn't find Arthur anywhere. Both protesters and police were pushing each other through the gate separating them.
Everyone was loud and obnoxious so I ended up leaving to find a quiet café.

I kept the mask in case I ever needed it again.
-------------------------------

It was close to midnight so I knew Arthur would most likely be home now. I walked over to his apartment to check on him.
Upon arriving, the door was unlocked so I walked in. The lights were off and it seemed eerily quiet. I walked over to the bedroom to see if he was asleep but he wasn't. In fact he wasn't in the bedroom, bathroom, living room. Anywhere.
The phone began ringing but I didn't answer it. I waited to see if Arthur would come out to answer. He didn't.

As I looked around the house I reached the kitchen. I was taken back by the mess all over the floor. All the milk and food was thrown everywhere and the fridge shelves were laying on top of everything. I wrapped my hand around the fridge handle and carefully pulled it open.

I gasped as I bound back covering my mouth. Inside sat Arthur, curled up shuddering in a ball. He could barely move or speak. How long had he been in there I wondered. I warily pulled him out and helped him to his bed.
I sat him down as I wrapped towels and blankets all around him.
He was shivering in my arms and his eyes were red and puffy.

After about 10 minutes he had regained strength and he could speak clearly now. "Why did you pull me out?" I stared at him in bewilderment. Did he really just say that? I scowled at him.
"I'm sorry" He looked me in the eyes. "I spoke with him" He said.
So that explained why I didn't see him in the protest. After a long silence he told me what Thomas Wayne had said to him about how he was apparently adopted and his mother was delusional.

He sighed as I grabbed his hand. "I'm sure he was lying just to get under your skin, Penny would've told you". I tried to comfort him.
"I don't know, I always felt like she was hiding something from me" He replied.
"Listen you're letting him get to you. He's not worth it. I mean he punched you in the face for crying out loud" I was beginning to get angry. Not at Arthur but at Thomas Wayne.

"But what if he's telling the truth! Huh!" Arthur started to raise his voice.
"What if this whole time I've been lied to! By my own mother! If that's even what she is to me!" He scoffed.
"Who's telling the truth? Whose lying?! I can't tell anymore. What if this whole time I've been living in a lie?! Am I even Arthur Fleck?! Is that my real birth name?!" His breath quickened and his voice was breaking.
I could see him welling up as he held his throat.

Oh no. He began chocking as he desperately tried to hold back laughter. I hugged him tight pulling him close. His laugh grew louder, hysteric and painful. I tried to speak but it was no use. He clung to my waist laughing into my chest. I couldn't stop it this time. It was all too much for Arthur. All I could do was sit there, holding him waiting it out.

I hated seeing him like this. It was gut wrenching knowing how torn up he was.
I let a small tear escape from my eye, I couldn't hold it back. I loved him and to see him aching like this was torture.
-------------------------------

I had stayed the night at his. He wanted me to stay so I did. Anything for him. We had managed to calm each other down and finally got some sleep. I had woken up in his arms by the sound of the telephone ringing. I nudged Arthur slightly for him to wake up.
He groaned before burying his head into my neck.
"My name is Shirley Wood, I work for the Murray Franklin show" As the woman on the phone spoke, Arthur kissed my neck and sat up.

Arthur got out of bed and walked over to the phone. "Who is this?" I heard him ask. At this point I couldn't hear the woman anymore but I knew it was something to do with Murray Franklin and the clips of Arthur that were shown.
I sat on the edge of the bed staring at him.

"Murray wants me on the Murray Franklin show?" Arthur's voice was timid and skeptical. I slowly got up curious to what was being said.
"Yeah that sounds great" Arthur put down the phone.
He slowly walked over to me and stood in front of me. He looked into my eyes not speaking. He looked concerned but steadily grew happier. There was light in his eyes before he picked me up and sprung onto the bed with me.
He shook me in excitement before speaking.

"I'm going to be on the Murray Franklin show".
