Keefe felt so betrayed. When he really needed Sophie, she had ignored his calls. All 12 of them. And then she acted like nothing happened. All week she had ignored him, and now she was at Everglen making tiktoks? Sure if he had called her once he wouldn't have minded, but twelve times? How could she miss it? And to think that he had fallen for her? How?
He felt like an idiot for being like this. He was just being petty. He was just being selfish. Sophie was allowed to have time to herself. He was better than this.
He wanted to stop being like this, being so petty and selfish, but a voice at the back of his mind kept saying, "She could have called once". He tried to stop the voice, but it kept poking. Poking him until he bent in.
And he bent in.
He wanted to scream and chuck his phone against a wall, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. The phone had nothing to do with Sophie and helping the Black Swan gave him a purpose. So instead of destroying it, he turned it fully off.

Everglen had been fun, but it was getting late now and Sophie wanted to get in some more studying. Well, try to get in some more studying.
When Sophie came home, she flopped onto her bed, but instead of being greeted by pillows and blankets she landed on some hard. It turned out to be her phone. Edaline must have put it here while she was at school. She quickly checked for notifications. She had 270 new followers but that wasn't the first thing she noticed. The first thing she noticed was 12 missed calls from Keefe. 12 missed calls! That's why he was acting so odd all week. She called him herself but he didn't pick up the first- or the sixth- time. Well, she thought, I kinda deserved that.
Why had she listened to Fitz? She should have talked to Keefe. And she ignored him for half a week! Sophie couldn't even imagine how Keefe felt. She really needed to fix this. She wouldn't even think about midterms. If she didn't figure out something soon her and Keefe might not even have a friendship.
It was Saturday night, surely there was enough time to figure out something by tomorrow afternoon. She'd have to go to him because at this rate they would both be ancients when he picked up his phone again. She also probably wouldn't be allowed into his room. This reminded her of a human movie she had seen years ago where the guy held up giant signs to ask out this girl. That's it! That's what she'd do! Now she just had to find some poster board.

Did she actually expect him to pick up her calls? Keefe scoffed. She couldn't just do that, and then pretend nothing happened. No she couldn't. If she could ignore him for half a week he could ignore her for an evening.
Keefe tried to study but there was banging coming from his window. Like someone was throwing stuff at it. He opened his curtains and looked down, standing a story beneath him was Sophie and Sandor. They were throwing a furry yellow ball with a white stripe on it at his window. He assumed it was a human thing.
Slowly Sophie held up a sign. I'M SO SORRY. I FEEL LIKE AN IDIOT. The sign said. She set it down and picked up a different sign Sandor was holding. I WAS STUDYING AND- that was all keefe needed to read. He had heard enough excuses. He didn't need this right now. He walked back to his bed and continued studying.

Sophie didn't know that Keefe had left the window. She could barely see his room from down here. She had only known to start showing the signs when she saw the curtains move.
I'M SO SORRY. I FEEL LIKE AN IDIOT. She grabbed the next sign from Sandor. I WAS STUDYING AND WATCHING YOUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL WHEN EDALINE CAME IN. Next sign. SHE TOOK MY PHONE AWAY. I DIDN'T KNOW YOU HAD CALLED ME. Next sign.
I SHOULD HAVE TALKED TO YOU AT SCHOOL. I SHOULDN'T HAVE LISTENED TO FITZ. Next sign. CAN YOU PLEASE FORGIVE ME?
I CARE FOR YOU SO MUCH. I TRULY DO. THE LAST THING I WANT TO DO IS HURT YOU. YOU MAKE HAPPY. YOU MAKE ME FEEL WHOLE. WHEN I'M HAVING A BAD DAY YOU ARE THERE. YOU ARE MY ROCK, AND I WANT TO BE YOURS. I WANT TO BE DEPENDABLE AND TRUSTWORTHY. BUT I'M NOT. KEEFE, I LOVE YOU. She had been playing to say it at midterms but now felt like such a better time. KEEFE WHEN YOU CALLED ME GIRLFRIEND I LIT IN FIRE I WAS ECSTATIC. WHEN YOU KISSED MY FOREHEAD I EXPLODED WITH JOY. I WANT TO EXPERIENCE THAT MORE. And now it was time for the final sign. HOW DOES THAT SOUND, BOYFRIEND?
