"Ok. here's the plan," Dee whispered to the group at large. They were hidden in a broom closet, a map of the school laid out between them all. It was dark, and the only light came from Remus's wand as he illuminated the map before them. "Remus has dibs on the first hex, so the first course of action is to subtly find out where he is." he pulled out of his pocket five slips of parchment, and passed them out to each of them. "I bribed a seventh year into enchanting these for me. anything one of us writes will appear on the others. We'll spread out, and whoever finds him first will write down where they are, and Remus can head there to make the attack. Any questions?"
Remy raised his hand. "Isn't it gonna look weird if there are five random kids by themselves patrolling the place?"
"It might," Remus answered, "if there were going to be five separate kids. Dee and I are going to be sticking together and patrolling the upper floors, Virgil and Roman will be patrolling the bottom floors--"
"Wait, why am I with him?" Virgil cut in.
"Yeah, I'd really rather be with Remy than Professor Dumble- bore over here.
"Because I said so, shut up. Remy, you'll be stationed on the North balcony, where you're in full view of the courtyard. Peeves moves around a lot, so one of the groups will spot him before long."
"Remember to move like you're going somewhere, you two." Dee said, addressing Virgil and Roman. "Walk from one place to another then change directions, or it'll look like you're wandering."
"And act like you tolerate each other, please." Remus added.
They hesitated for a moment, then answered in unison, "... fine."
"Good. Everybody got a quill?" Dee asked. They all nodded. "Perfect, let's go."
Remus peeked his head out of the closet door to make sure the coast was clear, then they departed. Dee and Remus first headed for the fifth floor, then a short minute later, Remy made for the balcony, leaving only Vigil and Roman left in the closet.
Roman lit his wand, hoping to make it less awkward. After a minute, when the corridor outside sounded quite still, Virgil said, "C'mon." They left the small room at a trot, heading for the first floor to begin the search.
"Why are you walking so fast?" Roman said as they passed the Great Hall, headed for the next flight of stairs.
"What? I'm not."
"we've literally passed up every single person we've come across in under three seconds. That's got to be the first time in my life I've actually had to keep up with someone."
"Oh." Virgil paused, though not slowing his pace one bit. "well, you heard them. We're supposed to look like we're going somewhere."
"We're also supposed to look like we like each other, but you're not making that effort."
"Will you just stop criticizing the way I walk??"
"Okay! I was just saying!"
They fell silent once more, reaching the library door, walking inside and pacing among separate shelves so as to look like they were there for something--
"Oh, hi Patton!"
Virgil whipped his head from Patton to Roman, who had appeared at the other end of the shelf, and who had spoken at the same instant as he had. Patton, seated in a cozy nook between Logan and Emile, looked between the two of them. "... hi guys." he said, avoiding Virgil's eye as he gazed at him in disbelief.
"Are you boys looking for something?" said a waspish voice from behind Roman. he jumped backward with a shout, which was immediately stifled by a loud "SHHHHHHH" from the school librarian, Madam Pince, having just appeared in their midst glaring at the new arrivals. "this is a library, not a common room. if you're not reading... leave."
