Previously on And They Were Wizards: ... JK This is literally titled part 2. If you need me to summarize, what are you even doing here?
Roman skipped breakfast. The less time he spent around his love-struck prank partner, the easier this would be for both of them. Still, he found his mind spiralling into worrisome chasms of 'what if' any time he had to focus on something. He couldn't say he had an easier time at acting normal than Virgil did that day. Even after meeting Patton in Defense Against the Dark Arts.
"Roman... I don't really know how to put this but..."
Roman gave a long sigh. "How is he?"
"What?"
"Virgil. Is he doing okay? Has he embarrassed himself?"
Patton hesitated. "He's been acting... really weird. It's like he has two modes; one minute he's anxious and jumpy and can't sit still, and then the next he's all excited and whispering to me about— stuff."
"What kind of stuff?" Roman asked, feeling he already knew the answer.
"Mostly... you?"
Roman buried his face in his book, groaning. From what he'd read on the potion, he knew he couldn't really have expected much better, but the knowledge of what was happening to his friend was next to unbearable.
"What's going on?" Patton continued, "Is this a prank he's doing?"
"Oh, it's a prank alright." Roman snarled through gritted teeth, the color rising in his face at the thought of Remy. "But he's not doing it." Suddenly, Roman thought of a question he'd been meaning to ask. "Hey Pat, did Virgil eat or drink anything before breakfast?"
"Uhh, I don't think so," said Patton, taken aback. He looked up, trying to remember. "Oh, the Weasley twins were throwing candy around in the corridor for fun. Virge caught some in his mouth." he put a hand over his mouth in realization as he saw Roman's expression harden. "Do you think it had something in it?"
"I'm positive." Said Roman, fleetingly remembering Remy talking with Fred and George in hushed voices in the corner of their dormitory. Just a little bit of eavesdropping and he could've kept it all from happening. But nooooooo, Remy was upset and needed his spaaaace. This was what you got for being considerate.
Roman continued reading glumly, wondering how he might get his hands on some food at lunch without running into Virgil, and wondering if anything would be the same between them after all this was over.
"Oh, by the way..." Patton said apologetically, "you might wanna figure something out for the Charms assignment, because Virge signed 'Virgil Bond' on his heading and I couldn't get him to change it." He looked as if he were holding in a slight laugh.
"Thanks, Pat." Roman grunted.
***************************
By lunch, Roman felt the hunger clawing at his insides, but glimpsed Virgil in the corner of the hall sitting alone, eyes combing the whole Gryffindor table, and couldn't bring himself to make a scene in front of everyone in the hall. Sighing, he turned on his heel and made for some other region of the castle where he might study his hunger away.
Roman was walking slowly through an empty hallway, and was just thinking of going back to the common room when an amused voice behind him called, "hey, loverboy!"
Roman spun around. Dee was walking leisurely toward him, holding a baked chicken wing.
"'Thought you might be hungry." he said, tossing the wing over to Roman.
