Ever since discovering they both had cordial friendships with Patton, and therefore being forced into a friend group, most of them had hoped Virgil and Roman would find common ground somewhere. But even after a four week period under the same roof, each found the other quite as annoying and insufferable as ever.
Their enmity, however, did not change the fact that Hufflepuff and Gryffindor always took herbology together. And so, ten-o-clock Friday morning found the class of third years chatting outside greenhouse three, an excited buzz upon the chilly autumn air, as the next day would be all of their very first Hogsmeade weekend.
"So really, the only question is how much time to spend in each shop just to make sure we see everything!" said Patton, beaming as he thought of the next day.
"I mean we're gonna get to go again." said Remy, shrugging, "I have to get inside that Joke shop though."
"Say hi to Remus and Dee while you're there." Roman scoffed, "they're going to be in there all day if I know them.
"We definitely need to all meet up in the Three Broomsticks before the end of the day though, right? Patton asked the other three.
"Yeah, that'll at least mean one thing to look forward to." yawned Virgil boredly. He looked more dismal this year than ever, as Joan had given him their entire palette of black eyeshadow, which he now applied underneath his eyes every day.
"What do you mean??" Patton turned to Virgil quickly, "you'll get to see all the sites and shops- just the novelty of it should be enough reason to be excited!"
"Yep." Virgil answered, but did not elaborate. Roman squinted at his evasive glance for a moment, before the greenhouse door was unlocked from behind them by Professor Sprout.
They would be continuing today on securing seeds from their Puffapods. There were more inside the small pink flowers than any of the class would've assumed could fit. They were also tricky to find and pull out without damaging the plant itself. The group continued to chat as they set about their task.
"Logan told me it's the only entirely wizard inhabited settlement in Britain!" Said Patton.
"Isn't there Diagon Alley, though?" Asked Virgil, confused.
"Well Muggles can get in there, can't they?" Roman answered him, "Hogsmeade is protected by the same magic as Hogwarts. So no muggles can even see the place."
"That makes a difference." Virgil replied with an eyeroll.
"Uh, yeah." Roman snapped back.
"Anyone else excited about the relics though?" Patton cut through the tension hurriedly.
"Oh right! You guys have to come with me to the Shrieking Shack, it's supposed to be so haunted!" Remy joined in enthusiastically.
"Um, we actually-- definitely shouldn't go there." Virgil cut in nervously.
"What, you scared of some violent ghosts, Marilyn Monrose?" Roman laughed, "you haven't even been there yet!"
"I just-" to their surprise, Virgil went slightly pink. "Messing with things like that isn't my thing. And I'd- I'd honestly much rather be watching Beauty and the Beast on Blu-ray, because it just came out." He said it all in a rush.
"You don't even have access to a Blu-ray player here!" Roman argued.
"You know what Blu-ray is?" Patton questioned.
"We have one at my place." Remy explained quietly, "Roman comes over to watch The Fox and the Hound sometimes."
"Yeah, so I'll have you know I'm familiar with the process of working VDVs, and if muggle tech worked here, I would certainly be using it!" Roman shot at Virgil.
