"Congrats!" I yelled over the crowd. Dylan winced, knowing I was right next to his ear. There was no reason to yell.
The football game had just ended and the Wildcats won yet another game. After Dylan's pathetic first game, he really stepped up. I was super proud of him.
He let me go from his tight hug and moved on to Jasmine. I took the time to step down to the fence that separated the field from the bleachers.
"Reece!" I called out, waving him over. His lips parted into a huge grin as he jogged his way over. "Good game! Coach made the right call making you his assistant."
He beamed at me. "Someone's in a good mood."
My smile faltered as I realized I shouldn't be smiling right now. But, as quick as it came, I pushed the sadness away and regained my grin. "Of course. My best friend is the best freaking captain this school's ever had!"
His eyes narrowed in an accusing fashion. "What about me?"
"You were co-captain," I reminded him. "And from what I remembered, you didn't even deserve the position."
He didn't take my words to heart and instead shrugged in agreement. It wasn't like I was lying. He barely played on the team last year. The only reason he was made co-captain was to satisfy the other seniors on the team.
"So, you heading to the party tonight?"
I nodded, wondering why he'd ask about that. Then realization dawned upon me. "Is Ben gonna be there?"
His brows shot up at my enthusiasm. "Someone's excited. Why, do you want him to be?"
Yes, but not for the reasons you're implying.
"Just answer the question, Anderson."
His golden-brown eyes lit up as he softly chuckled. "I'm pretty sure Skylar said something about him going. I'm unsure though, we haven't hung out for a while."
My own smile faltered as I felt the wind knocked out of me. Skylar didn't talk to him because she was too busy consoling Dean or whatever.
His thick brows furrowed with concern and all signs of amusement disappeared. "Wait, I'm not gonna be there. I don't want you talking to him without supervision."
I hid my annoyance. I knew he was only looking out for me, but I wasn't a child. I could handle myself.
"Relax, nothing's going to happen," I casually laughed to feign nonchalance. I didn't want him to catch on to my evil intentions. When he didn't look convinced, I added, "Dylan will be there too, so you can retire from playing my shining knight in armor."
A sad smile played on his lips. He faintly whispered so quietly, I was sure I wasn't meant to hear, but I did. "I don't wanna."
Another twinge of guilt panged through me. I never considered the fact that Reece would still have feelings for me after all this time. It couldn't be possible, right?
No, he was just concerned for me. That had to be it.
"Okay, but please be careful. If you choose to drink, make sure you stick with your friends. We all know how quick you are to blackout."
He was referring to my infamous three drink rule, where I forgot everything that happened after my third alcoholic beverage. It sucked I was a lightweight, but I also loved it. It made getting drunk much cheaper, plus it was easy to drown away the pain.
Maybe I'd drink tonight.
"Will do," I saluted him.
Laughing, he pushed his long golden hair out of his eyes. The gentle breeze only pushed the stray strands back on his forehead. My hands itched to control his untamed hair, but I clenched my fists instead. I couldn't taint the moment with my weirdness.
