~After I helped Andrew clean out his house, he treated me to take out. We decided on Chinese because it was the easiest thing to order.
As I sat around his fancy living room with a movie droning in the background and kung pao in my box, I found myself missing Dean again. It was our favorite food. I wished he would come out of nowhere and stab his fork into my container when I wasn't looking, then made a comment about how my food somehow always tasted better than his.
But none of that happened and I went home feeling empty.
Now, Jasmine and Emma were sitting in my bedroom and talking about random stuff while I mindlessly picked at my cuticles.
"Hello... Earth to Bella."
My eyes snapped up to the girls' annoyed faces.
"Jeez Bella, you could at least pretend to pay attention," Jaz teased.
"Sorry," I sighed.
"No worries, I understand how bad a breakup can be," Emma said, giving me a sympathetic smile.
Jaz scoffed and gave her an incredulous look. "Oh, please. They'll be back together by the end of the month."
I furrowed my brows in confusion. What was she talking about?
She noted my confusion and explained. "Girl, this is what you guys do. You break up, hate each other's guts, then back together. It's happened like five times."
I solemnly shook my head. "No. This time it's official."
Both perked up and eyed me warily. "What makes you say that?" Emma asked.
Jaz shifted closer so she was touching shoulders with me. We both had our backs against my headboard, while Emma was sprawled out at the foot of my bed. It was almost like she knew she wasn't in the best territory so she kept her distance.
"Skylar."
My one-word answer was enough of an explanation for both of them. They wistfully nodded and gave me looks of pity.
Pity. I was getting pity from my friends.
"I don't wanna talk about it anymore," I huffed, dejected by their emotion. If I wanted pity, I would've told anyone else in the damn world. They weren't supposed to pity me, they were supposed to help or even hype me up.
"Bella, you never wanna talk about it. Don't you think it's better to let it out?" Emma said, exasperated, and poked my socked foot. I instinctively kicked but she rolled away just in time to miss.
"You're one to talk," I snapped. "Are we ever gonna talk about what I saw that day?"
Her face paled as she remembered my annoyance toward her. Jaz, who was still unknown to the whole situation, eagerly leaned in. She's been dying to know what happened since the night I walked out of the party.
"I-uh," Emma stuttered.
"What happened?" Jasmine asked. Her brown eyes flickered between me and the guilty party.
I would've never aired out Emma's problems like that, but her pity and sass sparked a newfound annoyance in me. So, I told Jasmine everything I saw, including the part where they were both sober when making out.
"Holy shit," she whispered and covered her mouth. Then her widened eyes narrowed into slits as she looked at the black-haired girl. "Emma, what the fuck?!"
Emma gave us helpless looks as tears pooled in her eyes. My irritation faltered as I realized she was genuinely hurting. I didn't really realize this was actually a big deal until now.
