A harsh whining sound suddenly filled the room, making me wince and cover my ears. The shell of one of Tony's bots came stumbling out of a room. "No. How could you be worthy? You're all killers," The bot's voice was mechanical and unnerving. "Stark?" Cap asked. "JARVIS?" Tony asked his AI.
"I'm sorry I was asleep. Or I was a dream," The bot said. "Reboot. Legionnaire has a buggy suit," Tony said, tapping something on his thing. "There was this terrible noise and I was tangled in, hmm...strings. Had to kill the other guy. He was a good guy," It said. "You killed someone?" Cap asked. "Wouldn't have been my first call, but down in the real world we're faced with ugly choices," It said.
"Who sent you?" Thor asked. "I see a suit of armor around the world," Tony's voice rang out from the bot. "Ultron," Bruce said. "In the flesh. Or no, not yet. Not this chrysalis. But I'm ready. I'm on a mission," Ultron said. "What mission?" Nat asked.
"Peace in our time," I heard thrusters firing up. Legionnaire bots burst through the walls, the harsh and loud sound making me wince. Cap kicked a table at it, and we all scattered. Hill started firing a gun at it. Tony got shot into a bookcase, and Rhodey shattered some glass as he flew through the air and onto a bridge below.
Clint disappeared under a table, and Nat and Bruce disappeared behind the bar. One of the bots started firing at me, and I ducked. "Ellie! Get outta there!" Clint shouted from his spot. Fear bubbled up inside of me, and I vanished. I felt something click inside of me, and acid shot from my wrist, landing on one of the bots and causing the metal to corrode.
Tony jumped onto one of the bots, wrestling with it in the air. "Stark!" Someone yelled. "One sec, one sec!" Tony said from his spot. Tony managed to shut down the bot he was on with a screwdriver. "Cap!" Clint yelled, flinging Cap's shield at him.
Cap quickly caught it and flung it at one of the other bots, cutting it in two. "That was dramatic. Hey, weren't there 10 of you? I'm sorry, I know you mean well, you just didn't think it through. You want to protect the world, but you don't want it to change. How is humanity saved if it's not allowed to evolve? Look at these. These puppets. There's only one path to peace. The Avengers' extinction," Having enough of Ultron's accusations, I shot a large amount of acid, causing the face and body to melt away. "I had strings but now I'm free," Ultron sang, oil leaking from the head. "Ellie? Where'd you go?" Tony asked, and I reappeared. "Invisibility. Right," He said.
Tony and Bruce vanished to their lab, the rest of us following. "All our work is gone. Ultron cleared out. He used the internet as an escape hatch," Bruce said. "Ultron," Steve said, barely audible to the normal ear. "He's been in everything. Files, surveillance. Probably knows more about us than we know about each other," Nat said, leaning against a counter. "He's in your files, he's in the internet. What if he decides to access something a little more exciting?" Rhodey asked.
"Nuclear codes," Maria said, Rhodey echoing her. "Look, we need to make some calls, assuming we still can," Rhodey said. "Nukes? He said he wanted us dead," Nat said. "He didn't say 'dead.' He said 'extinct.'" Steve said. "He also said he killed somebody," Clint said, leaning on some railing.
"There wasn't anyone else in the building," Maria said. "Yes, there was," Tony said, pulling up a hologram of a yellow blob. "What? This is insane," Bruce said in disbelief. "JARVIS was the first line of defense. He would have shut Ultron down. It makes sense," Steve said quietly. "No. Ultron could have assimilated JARVIS. This isn't strategy. This is...rage," Bruce said.
Thor marched up in his Aesir armor, grabbing Tony by the neck. "Woah, Woah, Woah," Rhodey said. "It's going around," Clint said as Thor lifted Tony higher in the air. "Come on, use your words, buddy," Tony said. "I have more than enough words to describe you, Stark," Thor snarled.
"Thor. The Legionnaire," Steve said, and Thor put Tony down. "Trail went cold about 100 miles out, but it's headed north. And it has the scepter. Now we have to retrieve it, again," Thor said. "Genie's out of that bottle. Clear and present is Ultron," Nat said. "I don't understand. You built this program. Why is it trying to kill us?" Cho asked, and Tony started laughing.
"You think this is funny?" Thor asked. "No. It's probably not, right? This is very terrible. Is it so...is it so...it is. This is terrible," Tony said, resisting the urge to laugh. "This could have been avoided if you hadn't played with something you don't understand," Thor said. "No. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It is funny. It's a hoot that you don't get why we need this," Tony snapped. "Tony, maybe this might not be the time," Bruce said tentatively.
"Really? That's it? You just roll over, show your belly every time someone snarls?" Tony asked. "Only when I've created a murder bot," Bruce said. "We didn't. We weren't even close. Were we close to an interface?" Tony asked. "Well, you did something right. And you did it right here. The Avengers were supposed to be different than S.H.I.E.L.D," Steve said. Their voices started to get louder, and I started hearing a whining.
"Anybody remember the time I carried a nuke through a wormhole?" Tony asked. "No, it's never come up," Rhodey said. "Saved New York?" Tony asked. "Never heard of that," Rhodey said. "Recall that? A hostile alien army came charging through a hole in space. We're standing 300 feet below it. We're the Avengers. We can bust arms dealers all the livelong day, but that up there, that's...that's the endgame. How were you guys planning on beating that?" Tony asked.
"Together," Steve said. "We'll lose," Tony said. "Then we'll do that together too. Thor's right. Ultron's calling us out. And I'd like to find him before he's ready for us. The world's a big place. Let's start making it smaller," Steve said. The whining started to get louder and louder, and I could hear everything going on in the room. Maria's pencil tapping on her foot, the soft creaks of the building settling, everyone's footsteps echoing through the building, Tony and Bruce's machines clicking and whirring.
"Ellie, are you alright?" Clint's voice snapped me back into reality. "Yeah, I'm fine," I said, leaving the room and going onto the helicarrier pad. That only made it worse. The sound of people's feet against the pavement rang out, the honking of horns seeming impossibly loud, aircraft roaring past. My head felt like it had been used as a drum during a rock concert, and the whining got louder and louder and louder.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and heard a voice cutting through the noise. It was Nat. I couldn't see her. I could feel her, hear her, sense her presence. "Ellie, what's wrong?" She asked.
"The voices...they're so loud,"
a/n The whine will come into play later, I promise. Also, see if you can figure out what causes it.
