Scott:
I was walking along the carpeted corridors, heading to the workshop to try to repair my glasses. Honestly, there was always something wrong with these new models; I almost burned Storm’s hair off yesterday. ACCIDENTALLY, I swear; when suddenly, I heard the Professor call my name. He didn’t technically ‘call’ my name, you know, more like I heard his voice from inside my head; but either way, I knew I was being summoned. So, like the good guy I was, I made my way back out into the chilly, windy day, across the courtyard, up several flights of stairs, dodging Storm who still looked like she hadn’t forgiven me, into the Professor’s study.
The Professor was a kind man; stern, yet soft spoken. His back was towards me, and he was facing the circular window that was overlooking the garden. I cleared my throat, although I really didn’t need to. The Professor was one of the most gifted people who ever lived, and thanks to his amazing mental powers, well, let’s just say that he knows everything.
The Professor swiveled his wheelchair around and turned to face me.
“Ah, Scott, I hope I haven’t interrupted you with anything?” His eyes twinkled.
I grinned. “No, absolutely not. Anything I can help you with?”
Secretly, I was hoping for a mission assignment, you know, like protect another city from Magneto, our arch-evil nemesis; always out to destroy ‘the weak, twisted humans’, for ‘our betterment’.
As you probably could tell, I was getting bored staying at school.
“As a matter of fact, yes, I do have a favor to ask from you. A new student will be arriving soon…”
He paused, and turned his wheelchair around so he was half facing the garden.
‘Now… let’s just say that this new student of mine is… exceptionally… gifted. More gifted than she knows, and in fact, she could very well be the most gifted student this school has ever seen…”
The Professor’s voice trailed away. I could not read his expression, but from his side profile, I could tell that he seemed concerned, worried... but at the same time, curious. Hmm. The Professor was usually better than this in concealing what he felt, so I must say, I was already very intrigued by this new student.
“… Anyway. Like most of the other kids, she has a slight trouble controlling her powers…”
I couldn’t help but notice how the Professor had stopped as ‘slight’.
“…and it would make me very happy indeed if you, Scott, could help her with this problem of hers. She needs help, very badly.”
The Professor had grown quiet.
I sat stunned. No student of this school has ever been placed in charge of another. No matter how old we were, as long as we were in this School, we were all under the direct tutelage of the Professor. The older ones, like me, were sometimes requested to ‘look after’ (or, in other words, babysit) the younger ones, when the Professor had tasks to do… but… first time or not, being asked to actually look out for another student seemed to me a great, big honor.
Not to mention a great, big, pain in the neck.
I mean, who would want to look out after another kid? I was already 25, and could already go out and leave the school anytime, if I wanted to. The only reason a bunch of us (including me) stayed on was because we believed our powers could still be developed. Having some kid tagging along me would definitely slow me down. It would tie me up to the school.
Ugh! How tiresome!
“Professor,” I began carefully. “What could I possibly help her with? I mean, I’m not the most patient one around here, and I’m definitely not the strongest." I paused, then decided to push my luck. "Nor am I the wisest. In fact, I’m not one you’d trust a highly talented kid’s education to! With all due respect, shouldn’t she be under your guidance, since this is your school anyway?”
