Alex:
I trudged back upstairs. Truthfully, I did not know my way around at all, and would have been much better off accepting Rogues’s and Wolverine’s help in getting back to my room, but I wanted to be alone.
Mutant.
That’s what I am now. A mutant.
A freak.
Something nature had never wanted to create.
A walking mutation.
I felt a wash of disgust at myself sweeping over me.
How did this happen to me? One minute I was Alexandria Sarah Hayden, a nobody. (Okay. Maybe that wasn’t perfectly through. Everybody who is anybody would have heard of my family, one of the richest families in the entire country.) But I was happy, for god’s sake. I had decided to take a gap year between school and college, and was going to spend the winter in Vail with my mother. Next thing I knew, I was…
The dim chandeliers flickered suddenly.
I stopped in my tracks. No, I wouldn’t think about that. I couldn’t afford to lose it now.
Trying to calm myself down, I focused on where I was now. My legs had taken me to yet another huge, quiet carpeted hall, and the three corridors branching out of the hall were lined with wooden doors identical to that of my room. I had no idea how many floors this place had, but it seemed as though I had reached the highest floor. I looked up; the high ceiling consisted of beautiful stained glasses. After admiring them for a few minutes, I decided to explore the hall, and started walking around it. Bookshelves lined all four walls of the hall, and as I approached them, I could see that they were filled with books. Titles I had never heard of, in all languages, were just sitting there, waiting for people like me to read them. Cozy armchairs were arranged, seemingly randomly, throughout the room. Where there was no bookshelves, full length windows were fitted, and through them, I could see boughs of trees.
Wow. I must be really high up.
Suddenly, I heard a door creak, and I turned. The epitome of miracles, I saw Scott coming out of one of the many doors on the right-wing corridor. He was not heading towards the hall, though; he was going the opposite way and did not see me. I ran towards him. The carpet muffled my footsteps, and since I was wearing sneakers anyway, there wasn’t much to be heard.
“Scott!” I called, as I tugged on his black leather jacket.
