Lea’s POV --

The car ride back home was pretty awkward. It required a lot of effort for me to steady my breathing and act natural so as to not raise any questions from my parents. For majority of the ride, they talked amongst themselves, acting as if I didn’t exist, which is something I’m used to anyway. Neglection. I didn’t mind it because it just became something you learned to accept and besides, I still had my older sister, Lana, to lean on. Our life isn’t easy, we don’t have a lot of money, just enough to put food on the table and get other things.

No one knew what my life was like outside of school, unless you were Kira because I told her everything there is to know about me.

The car pulls up just a few feet ahead of where the pavement curved to lead towards the entrance of our house. It wasn’t big nor was it small it was average with two willow trees peeking just behind it. The neighborhood was never quiet, people were always arguing or throwing block parties, having family reunions, the list goes on forever. I never really came outside, unless I was headed to school and even then I’d pick up the pace to keep from having older guys whistle at me early in the morning.

I still couldn’t get over what just recently happened. I wanted so badly to ask my parents who ‘Jason’ is and what kind of business was he running, what was the building and why were they even visiting it as this time? So many questions filled my mind that I could literally sense that everything was about to boil over and spill out my mouth at any second.

While my parents were busy discussing whatever it is they were discussing in the car, I hurried on towards the house. We always left the door open, everyone knew my parents and trusted them so no one ever dared to try and break in. I guess that even though the neighborhood gets pretty hectic, we’re kinda like a family in an odd disgusting way. Well they’re a family, I’d rather not be apart of it.

“Lana?” I call, walking into the house and shutting the door behind me.

Instead of being greeted by her like usual, I was greeted by our black Maltipoo Mix, Jasper. I adjust my bag over my shoulder and crouch down to pet his head softly and leave a few kisses on the top of his head, he was in his hyperactive mood so I decided to open the door and allow him to run out for a bit and take care of his business, my dad normally cleaned up after him anyways.

“Lana!” I yell this time and walk towards the spiral staircase at the end of the hall.

“I heard you the first time dear sister!” She yells back, dragging out of the end of her sentence sarcastically.

I roll my eyes and open the door just after walking up the stairs. Lana was lying down on her stomach, feet swaying back and forth in the air behind her. She was filing her nails, taking her decent time to make sure they looked just right before she decided to begin painting them a soft shade of turquoise. I step into the room, dropping my bag onto the floor.

“We need to talk.” I shut the door and walk over to her bed where I lift myself onto it and roll over to lie beside her.
