Once we got back to the chapel, Tom and I sat at our desks and immediately starting pouring over our audition materials. We both had to memorize the balcony scene as well as prepare to act out a second scene with another student. Tom had to act out the opening scene with a student who was auditioning for Benvolio. I on the other hand had to act out a garden scene between myself and someone auditioning for the nurse.
"How's it going?" I asked Tom.
"I can't memorize this script," he whined, whipping around in his chair to face me. "It's all gibberish." He sighed. "How about you?"
"I think I've got most of the balcony scene memorized. I'm glad we don't have to memorize the second scene."
"Can you help me learn this? I have no idea what I'm doing," Tom groaned.
"Sure! Here," I said, standing and moving towards him. I jumped up and sat cross legged on his desk. "Okay, start by just reading your opening paragraph."
"But, soft. What light through yonder window breaks. It is the East, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief," Tom read blandly.
"No no no. Tom. You've got to put your heart into it!" He looked at me with a confused face. His eyebrows were raised and slightly furrowed. He still had his glasses on, which made him look even cuter. Wait, what? I shook my head and continued to coach Tom.
"Like this: But, soft!" I exclaimed "What light through yonder window breaks?" I asked to myself, furrowing my brows and looking slightly down. "It is the East!"I said with renewed energy, snapping my head back up to an imaginary balcony. "And Juliet is the sun!" I proclaimed happily while smiling softly. "Arise fair sun, and kill the envious moon, who is already sick and pale with grief," I said quieter, placing emphasis on sick and pale.
I looked back at Tom to see a starstruck gaze on his face. I couldn't help but blush and look down. "S-sorry," I stammered.
"No! No, don't be. That was amazing! I wish I could act half as well as that," Tom explained.
"You can, Tom! You do everyday for Jump Street, you just aren't thinking about it then. Try imagining this is just another bust, and the script is your case file and identity. It'll help you act with more emotion and might even help you memorize your lines," I suggested.
He thought for a few moments before acting out the lines with more emotion than I could have hoped for. His voice crescendoed and decrescendoed with raw emotion. His face contorted with what he felt, and frankly, it was beautiful. He was beautiful. I couldn't help but stare into his doe-like eyes.
"How was that?" he asked after finishing his dialogue.
"Tom, that was perfect! If you keep it up you'll get Romeo for sure," I assured.
"Wow. I didn't think it was that good," he said nervously scratching the back of his neck.
"Are you kidding me? Tommy, you're a natural!"
"She's right," Ioki said, stopping in front of Tom's desk.
"Hey, Harry," I greeted.
"Hi, (Y/n). Giving some acting lessons I see."
"Yep! Tom's an amazing student," I said looking back at him. A light blush dusted his cheeks and nose, and I couldn't help but smile. He's like a bashful little kid.
"Well, I guess if Ioki agrees it has to be true," Tom reasoned, and we all laughed.
...
Tom and I spent the rest of the day practicing our lines after looking closer at the audition materials and realizing auditions were after school this Friday. Could have mentioned that, Mr. Nelson, I thought to myself. We worked hard and eventually learned all of our lines. Doug, Judy, and Ioki stopped by once in awhile to check our progress and see if we needed help. By the end of our shift, we were well prepared for auditions.
After grabbing our things, Tom and I made our way to the parking lot and said our farewells.
"Good bye, my dear Romeo! I shall think of thee until the sun reunites us," I said dramatically while holding the back of my left hand to my forehead and placing my right hand over my heart.
"Juliet! Juliet! Your beauty will not be forgotten! Your radiance shines like the sun and you light up my doomed world," Tom said, collapsing to his knees. His right hand clutching his chest while his left hand was reaching towards me. "Do not leave, fair sun, for my world is dark without you."
"Alas, Romeo, my dearest Romeo, I must go. I must!" I proclaimed, while tearing myself away from Tom.
I turned back, only to make eye contact with Tom and break out into a fit of laughter. I walked towards him and offered my hand to help him up, laughing all the while. Tom took my hand, but instead of pulling him up, he pulled me down. I crashed down onto my knees and into his chest. Naturally, I wrapped my arms around him and pulled him into a bear hug. He rested his head on mine as we continued our laughing fit. To any onlooker, it must have looked crazy. Two grown-ass adults hugging and kneeling in a parking lot, seemingly laughing at nothing, but to us, everything made sense. We were happy laughing about our terrible Shakespeare improv and nothing else mattered but each other.
After we calmed down, Tom looked down at me. He was beaming, and his eyes slowly passed over each feature of my face. I did the same without realizing, taking in every little detail. His squinted eyes and scrunched nose left me breathless, not to mention his perfect teeth and his soft cheeks. We locked eyes then Tom's face suddenly fell. He stood up abruptly, leaving me confused. He helped me up off the ground and said, "You should probably head home. We've got a big day tomorrow, plus, Charles is probably waiting for you."
"Right..." I agreed, disoriented. I walked towards my car as Tom walked towards his mustang.
"Bye, (Y/n)," he said bitter-sweetly while climbing into the driver's seat.
"Bye," I said to no one in particular as Tom's car was already halfway out of the parking lot.
I was still bewildered by Tom's action while driving home. We seemed to be having such a good time, but Tom just... shut it down. I parked my car and walked into a dark, silent apartment.
"Charles," I called instinctively. No answer.
I trudged into the bedroom to find him asleep in our bed. It wasn't normal for him to be asleep this early; he's such a night owl. He must have had a long, busy day, I reasoned. I changed into my pajamas and went to the kitchen to find some dinner. I reheated some pasta from the beginning of the week and ate by myself in a dark and quiet kitchen.
...
The rest of the week passed uneventfully. Charles still avoided me, Tom and I practiced our lines, and I learned the same things I did 6 years ago.
I am soooo sorry about the wait between updates. My laptop would not start up and I eventually had to do a hard reset. Even after the reset I wasn't able to boot up my laptop, so now I'm using an old laptop that's very slow and very old. I'm not sure when I'll be able to write using my normal laptop, and I hate writing using this one, so I'm not sure when the next update will be.
