Kisses in the dark

Richard had been driving all day, Rose didn't have any complaints— the car had a decent air conditioning system and the radio worked pretty well. Plus the car wasn't the piece of junk she expected it to be, he had taste. It was a nice Chevrolet El Camino, marble black color. How did he possibly get such a nice car? She didn't know— and didn't want to pester with more questions. The drive was exchanged with short conversations and questions about Electrical billboards, gas station pumps, music of the age— and style. Richard from time to time talked about himself, things he liked, foods— stuff of that nature, Rose did all the listening instead of talking. His voice was so mellow to her ears, it soothed her to her core.

"Richard, as much as I love Billy Idol— can we please listen to something else?" Rose hid her laughter behind her hands and stared at the male beside her, he was aggressively singing and pumping his fist to 'Blue Highway'. He was singing the main vocals and trying to sing background vocals, it was honestly the funniest thing Rose had ever seen— if they weren't in the car, he'd probably do the entire guitar solos. Without much thought, she thought about joining in— eventually, she was singing along with him just as loudly with the same energy, swaying and dancing in her seat like a small child.

'Can you kiss me on a blue highway—hey, hey!" Their voices screamed with hidden laughs and chuckles, "Why do I miss you? How do I kiss you?" Rose shook her head, her hair following along wildly, the pair stared each other as the last guitar solo came to an end and so did the song, out of breath they broke out into a laughing fit and smiled to each other like children. Laying back her head Rose decided to simply take control of the music and play soft rock tunes, stuff she knew Richard wouldn't mind and that she was okay with. Below the hill and horizon, the 'Hollywood' sign stood boldly and proudly, the sun kissing the horizon behind it. Hues of dark blue and red mixed on the edge of the horizon as the sun set, eventually after a few minutes— it was dark.

Rose rested her head against the window and closed her eyes for a few seconds, unaware that Richards gaze was on her. He stared at her with a small smile playing on his lips, when her eyes opened, he was once again looking at the road while tapping his fingers against the steering wheel to the beat of the song playing. Along the side of the road, there was a side stop to enjoy the cliffs view to the large city from afar. Richard pulled up into it and blasted 'Dancing with Myself.' He began to dance around Rose while singing, he took her hands and swung them around in an attempt to get her to dance as well.

Rose giggled and began to awkwardly dance before loosening up after some seconds— then started to spin around while singing along. Richard grinned and grabbed her hips from behind and sung into the back of her ears, his breath tickled. Lightly, he spun her around to face him slightly, the side of her hip pressed against his lower abdomen as he tipped her over, leaning above her she could see how big his eyes were. His curls hung above her face, their faces inches apart— without thinking, Rose leaned up her eyes fluttering shut, she closed the gap.

His lips felt warm and melted onto hers, one of his hands snaked up behind the nape of her neck underneath her hair, he gripped a handful and yanked hard. A light gasp escaped her, which gave him an opportunity to an entrance and deepened the kiss, his tongue explored her mouth. After a few more seconds Rose gently pulled back and broke the kiss. Her eyes wandered up to Richard, he stared back with a handsome smile. Softly, he propped Rose back on her feet and pulled away. Suddenly, his warmth was gone and replaced by a gust of wind, it sent shivers down her spine. The cassette on the radio had stopped playing, there was silence. All that was heard was crickets chirping, and an occasional hoot from an owl.

"Well, what're you waiting for?" Richard called out from inside the car, he moved fast— acted as if the kiss meant nothing but an act of the moment. Rose hid what she could of her emotions and stifled a smile, scurrying and getting into the car. The instant she was in, Richard sped off. The windows were rolled down, the wind gushed into the car. Leaning against the windows open frame, the wind blew and kissed onto her skin, hair flailing behind her shoulders. She had left her life behind, just like what— her town wouldn't know of her whereabouts, she'd just be a missing case, but Los Angeles held a promising start for her— even with the possibility that Richard would leave her.

Without realizing, tears slipped out of her eyes. The wind swept them off and all she could do was hide her sobs of happiness and possible abandonment behind the rock and wind.

As the city came into closer view, the sight changed. They were no longer surrounded by thick and dense trees and boulders of hills — the mountains disappeared behind them and they were greeted by a large 'Welcome to Los Angeles, California.' sign, then— the highway. Richard drove as if he knew where he was going, Rose wiped her eyes and plopped back into her seat. Her chest felt heavy as she thought of how things would be once Richard was through with her, Where would he go? What would she do? And especially, Did that kiss mean anything?

Rubbing her eyes aggressively, she faked a yawn. "Don't worry sugar, we're about to get to our place— you can sleep all you want there." Even hearing his voice made her stomach churn. Sighing, she looked at Richard and then glanced away, the same troubling and heavy feeling sitting in her gut.
