I opened the bakery door, the bells above the door ringing, announcing my presence.

"One second." My mother's voice said from the next room over. She stepped out carrying a stack of boxes. Her face lit up with surprise when she spotted me.

"Oh Marinette!" She said, putting the boxes down on the counter. "What are you doing home? Is something wrong?"

"No, I just was sent home early." I said, not meeting her eyes. "You see there was this thing that happened with the tremors-"

"Are you okay sweety?" She said interrupting me. She quickly walked around the counter and hugged me. "Did anyone get hurt?"

"No, I'm fine mom." I said reassuringly, pulling out of her embrace. "No one got hurt."

"That's good to hear." She said brushing a strand of hair out my face. "I'm glad you made it safely home."

I wished I could've ended the conversation there, but unfortunately  I was going to have to tell her about my suspension from school. I sighed,  thinking of a way I was going to tell my mom about the incident with Lila, when a small figure came running around the corner.

"Marinette!" Manon cried, flinging herself onto me. I smiled as she wrapped her arms around me.

"Hey, Manon." I said, patting her head.

"There was a big tremor Marinette!" She said, looking up at me with her doe eyes. "The ground shook and your mom said a curse."

I looked up at my mom, surprised. My mom chuckled to herself as she packed boxes with baked goods.

"What exactly did she say?" I asked, pulling Manon off me. She motioned for me to bend over. I crouched beside Manon as she stood on her tippy toes and whispered in my ear.

"Oh dear!" I said, faking a gasp. "I can't believe my mom said Fudge Cake! How inappropriate of her! Especially in the presence of a young lady."

Manon giggled, her pigtails bouncing. I laughed, before remembering Mrs. Chamacks message for my mom.

"Oh, Mom." I said, walking behind the counter, Manon running ahead. "Mrs. Chamack said she won't be picking up Manon until later tonight.  The radio has her covering news on damage and traffic."

"That poor woman. She's going to be overworked if this continues." Mom said, shaking her head. "When did you run into her?"

"She gave me a ride." I said, as I sat to take off my boots. "She would've told you herself but traffic was horrible and she couldn't get any closer than 2 blocks."

"Oh dear." My mom said, pulling a plate of croissants out of under the counter. "Hopefully your father will make it home in time. If I am going to be looking after Manon till later tonight I'll need him to run the bakery."

"I can look after Manon." I said as I picked up my boots and stood. She gave my a hopeful look.

"Could you?"She asked, wiping sweat of her brow. "I would really appreciate it if you did."

"Of course Mom." I smiled. "Bedsides, I don't have anything else planned tonight."

"Great!" Mom said, wiping her hands on her apron. "I let you know then, when Mrs. Chamack comes to get Manon."

"Ok." I smiled. I then turned to Manon who was making faces at her reflection. "Come on Manon. Let's go up to my room."

"Can we play make believe again?" She said, jumping up and down. "I want to be The Puppeteer!"

"Sure," I said, following her into the next room. "As long as I get to be Princess Justice!"

"Deal!" She said, before running up the stairs.
