The moonlight shined through the opening of the big windows in your large, modern apartment. The cold breeze entered your room, having your curtains flow inside softly. It was half past twelve in the morning the last time you checked and you can't seem to find yourself falling asleep. Your body tossed and turned throughout the night and eventually you got tired of it.
You stood up from your bed and checked the time, one in the morning.
You chuckled at yourself for absolutely no reason making you shake your head. You walk to your desk and turned on some music. The voice of Frank Sinatra played softly through your speakers and you swayed your body side to side.
You danced around your room, your limbs flowing freely. Your giggles filled the room until you came into an abrupt stop.
You were alone.
You missed having your family around but something had to have happened.
That day was the worst day of your life. Not only did you lose just one person, but all at the same time. Your mother, father, and brother you loved, and still love, so dearly. You missed them.
You still can't believe you've survived that plane crash without them. Sometimes, you blame yourself for it and sometimes, you just accept the fact they are physically gone. Now, you lived in this home you shared with your family. Problem is, it doesn't feel like home.
You quickly changed from your silk pajamas and into a black oversized hoodie and a pair of leggings. You picked out a black beanie from your dresser and head to your desk. You took your phone that was nearly full, your Airpods, and a pack of cigarettes.
You weren't addicted, hell, you're far from that. You are actually used to it and somehow, you aren't dead yet. You take these two to three times a month. Your family is partly French, what can you do about that?
You closed your windows and the room instantly fell silent and warm. You placed the beanie on top of your head and head to the fire escape that was by the gym room's window.
As you reached the window sill, you unlocked it and pulled the window up before putting your leg over the ledge and onto the black metal. You closed the window leaving a little space for you to open later and faced the stairs. You plugged the headset in your ears and Freddie Dredd's voice played loudly. You placed your phone back in your pocket and climbed the metal steps. As you reached the rooftop, you threw your body up the ladder and your feet met the slightly rough pavement. You walked further to the other side of the rooftop and looked out on the Brooklyn skyline; all the red, yellow, and orange lights shine brightly.
You sighed contentedly and sat on the ledge then grabbed a cigarette from the box. You lit up the cigarette and took a puff. You feel your body relax and you watch your feet dangling over the ledge.
It's nice to be away from the problems you had and the rooftop is your safe haven. The rooftop of your apartment building is the place where you go to relax and forget about everything for a while.
