This chapter is dedicated to my friend Stella, as our friendship is always involved with awkwardness.

A shiny silver Volvo pulls up in Alice's driveway.
"That must be them!" Alice says excitedly. She must be really looking forward to hanging out with them, because she kept talking on and on about it during the half hour of truth or dare. I chose to play truth of dare to try and kill time, (and also get my mind of sneaking out after seeing how sad Mum looked,) but Alice somehow made the time drag on longer than something I would actually be looking forward to.
I grab my mustard coloured bag and sling it over my shoulder. I bought it in Vanuatu, Port Vila, and I bring it with me almost everywhere.
She races downstairs, and I follow, not quite as enthusiastic.
"Hey Mum, we will be back at around ten, don't wait up." She yells.
I look behind me, and her Mum gestures to Alice as if saying stop. So we stay still. She doesn't talk though, being on the phone.
I look at her, her eyes reveal anger. She looks at me, and they darken even more. My heart starts to race.
'What if it's my Mum?' The thoughts start to run through my mind. 'What will she do if it is? But it might not be, I mean, she could be talking to someone else. Anyone else who has been lying to her...?' It was unlikely. Extremely unlikely.
"Yes," Alice's Mum nods. "I won't say anything." And she hangs up.
We exchange glances, and realise that I'm standing alone under the door frame, while everyone else is outside.
I walk out, and standing in front of Alice are two boys. One tall, with blond, golden hair. And the other short with black hair.
"There you are!" Alice pulls me towards her, her expression as fake as anything.
"This is Jace," she looks towards the short black haired boy. "And this is Darcy." She gestures towards the tall blond haired boy.
We stay silent for a while, and then I realise I haven't introduced myself. They all look at me awkwardly.
"Oh right, sorry. My name is Samantha, but just call me Sam."
"Hi just call me Sam. It's nice to meet you." Says Darcy with a shy smirk.
I blush. Why the hell did I just blush!?
Alice's Mum breaks the silence when she comes staggering outside.
"Hello, there." She says. I don't think she realises how funny she sounded. She smiles at us all. "So who are you?" Says the Mother sternly.
"This is Jace, and Darcy." says Alice, sounding not quite confident.
Her Mum doesn't reply. She just stands there gawking at them. I wonder how awkward they feel?
"How old are you?" She asks.
"I'm seventeen," says Darcy quite comfortably, "and he is sixteen."
"Your a year older? Why?" Alice's Mum sounds as scary as anything.
"I repeated."
She stands there, confused.
"In school." He adds.
"Oh, well that explains why you are so tall."
He laughs.
But she was dead serious.
"Well, we have to go or we will be late for the movie." Alice tries to break the weirdness.
"Ok, what time does the movie end?" Asks the parent.
"8pm."
"So you should be back by 8:15."
"What!? We can't even hang out after?" Says Alice. If the two boys weren't here she would have stomped her foot and whined.
"No, because I'm not interested in you hanging about at night with older boys."
I look at them both, and you can see the weirdness, held captive in their eyes. I'm sure they would love to escape Alice's Mum. Sometimes I call her the devil.
"Fine." Alice gives in. "Bye." She waves and turns around heading to the car, not looking back at her Mother.
"It was nice to meet you, Miss." Says Darcy politely.
She ignores him.
We all get in the car. Darcy and Jace in the front, and Alice and I in the back. We start to drive away.
"Well, that was awkward." I state.
And we all laugh.
