The credits begin to roll through once the movie is finished. Alice looks at her watch. "Crap!"
"What?" Asks Jace.
"It's 8:05pm!"
"So?" Jace looks confused.
"I have to be back before 8:15pm!" Alice looks so frustrated because Jace is not catching on.
"Come on then! Let's go!" I jump out of my seat with Alice and we pull the boys behind us.
We run through the shops, pushing everyone out of the way. I think I heard a few mutters like "damn teenagers these days" and "never have any respect for their elders!"
But I ignored them and kept running. Whether we got to Alice's house in time or not meant life or death. Down the escalator, through the car park. We laughed the whole way until we reached the car. We jump in, in no particular order. I get in the front with Darcy, and Alice and Jace in the back.
8:10.
We speed down the street, all laughing but at the same time stressed. If we don't get there back at 8:15 Alice's Mum will most likely kill us.
We race down Alice's street.
8:13.
We turn in the driveway. And we all get out, putting on a show to seem like we all were taking our time.
We knock, and at 8:14, Alice's mother opens the door. A big smile, plastered across her face like this afternoon. I can see red circles, big bags held under her lying, devious eyes.
Something was bothering her. Whatever it was, it wasn't good. At all.
"Hi Mum." She smiles.
"Ok, have a good time?" She smiles sweetly. When did she EVER smile at someone and mean it? The answer to that is simple; never.
She doesn't even let us answer her question before she rudely talks over Jace.
"Well, you better be going. Goodnight."
Before she pulls Alice in by the collar of her shirt, Alice shoots me a warning through her eyes. As if to say 'run, while you still can!'
She slams the door, and from inside we can clearly hear Alice getting yelled at.
"You brat! You think it is ok to go out with Sam in the middle of the night and..." She holds. "Tell me. What did you do that night?"
I don't hear Alice's answer. I turn to head back to the car when I notice that Darcy and Jace are staring at me.
Once inside the car Jace asks interested "what did you do?"
I shake my head. I look at Darcy. He seems distracted. Next we drive to Jaces house to drop him off. We stay silent the whole time. Eventually we get there, and we say our goodbyes.
Then, it was just Darcy and I. We don't drive. His arm lays on the steering wheel, and his face rests on his knuckles.
Eventually I speak up.
"Darcy, what are you doing?" I ask nervously. I don't even know this Darcy, he could be an axe murderer for all I know.
"Sorry. It's just, what was bothering you before the movie?"
I look down at my feet. He turns to face me. His deep brown eyes drilling holes into my head.
"Is it the thing you did with Alice? Is that what's bothering you?"
"Do you know what it's like, to get into trouble by your parents, for something you actually didn't do on purpose?"
"Yeah, all the time."
I look at him. Tears in my eyes.
"My younger brother dobs on me about random stuff all the time. It's like if I breathe, then I get sent to gale."
We both laugh.
"Well, this was really big."
"May I ask what you did?"
I hesitate. I still don't know this kid and yet I'm pouring out my heart to him.
"Can I trust you? Because this affects me a lot."
"Sam, you can tell me anything."
"I smoked, I was forced by a drunk teenager to smoke. When I did, I thought that if I told everyone, I would be considered cool."
"Why haven't you told your parents the truth then?"
"Because, they won't listen. Their too distracted by how angry they are with me."
"Well, let me take you home and I could convince them."
I laugh, then look at his face. He was serious. I change my expression.
"No, I think it's up to me to tell them. But thank you, for the offer."
"No problem." He says. And we start to drive.
"My parents are going to kill me!"
"Why?"
"Cause I snuck out."
"Gee, that helps the situation." Says Darcy flatly.
"Well, it's fine, because I can tell them the truth and I won't get in trouble for going out tonight." I try to convince myself.
"Maybe." He says.
I sure as hell hope so.
