"I Heard A Rumour"

Bored of the silence that had fallen over the pair, Eleanor leaned forward and stitched the radio on. She kept it at a low volume, beginning to hum softly to the music that played through the speakers. After a while, she began to feel the car speeding up. Glancing over at her sister, she saw that a determined look had fallen over her features.

"Allison?" She asked, her quiet voiced laced with concern.

The older sister shook her head slightly and seemed to snap back to reality. "Sorry." She apologised. "I was just thinking about Claire. It shouldn't be on us to stop the end of the world."

Eleanor sighed sadly. "I know. I wish we didn't have to, either. But if we don't save humanity... Who will?"

After some time, once the rain had stopped and the sun had risen on a new day, they found themselves driving down a lane. Eleanor stared out the window, admiring the scenery around her. If she wasn't there to try and stop the apocalypse, she would almost think of it as pretty. The car pulled up outside a beautiful cabin and once Allison had turned off the engine, the girls climbed out of the vehicle and walked up to the house.

Eleanor followed Allison round to the back of the house, being careful to not trip over anything and accidentally alert someone to their presence. They quietly made their way over to one of the windows and looked in. The place seemed empty.

Eleanor's eyes glanced over the room, her gaze landing on one of the chairs. "Is... is that Vanya's violin case?" She whispered, turning to face Allison?"

"It must be." Allison answered, turning to her younger sister. "Which means..."

"She was here." Eleanor said, turning back to the window.

Eleanor sighed for what felt like the hundredth time as they sat in the stationary car. They had been driving along the main road when they got caught up in a traffic jam. A little way up ahead, just outside a small restaurant, was a police car. The sound of its sirens was causing Eleanor's head to start pounding- not helped by the fact that she was probably a little hungover.

"I'm going to check that out." Allison informed her, climbing out of the car.

"I'll follow you." Eleanor nodded, walking beside her sister as they made their way over to the scene.

As they reached the sign for the building, Eleanor spotted a scarf hanging from it. She reached up and pulled it down. "Is it just me, or does this look like Vanya's?" She asked, handing it to her sister.

Allison nodded as she took a closer look at the scarf. "You're right. Follow me." Eleanor obliged as she followed her sister under the yellow police tape.

"Hey. Pardon me, ma'am." An officer called out to them as he rushed over to them. "I gotta ask you to stay behind the lines. We had an accident here last night."

"What kind of accident?" Eleanor asked. She shoved her hands into her pockets to hide the fact that they were shaking from worry.

"Miss. The line, please." The officer reminded her.

"Oh. Yes. Sorry." Eleanor apologised as she and Allison crossed back under the police tape.

"Got a lot of stuff on the ground, okay? To be wary of."

"What happened?" Allison asked the officer.

"Well, we're still trying to figure that out." The man explained. "As soon as we do, you'll be able to read it in the newspaper with everybody else. So, have a nice day."
