Chapter 12 - The Final Piece of the Past

Zenitsu’s POV

“y-yes, mom…” I hang up the phone after.  I was shaking. When I saw the news, it hadn’t crossed my mind that this would be a possibility. They were abroad from a long long time ago, but they didn’t say when they’d be back or even text me that they were already here. I got them out of my mind when they left a few years ago. They left me with my aunt when I was still in school and then when I had become an idol, I got my own place so I thought that I didn’t have to worry about her and everyone else in the family.

I see Tanjiro looking at me again with eyes that was filled with worry. I felt terrible making him worry. I waited for my nerves to calm down and also for him to start asking questions.

5 minutes have passed and he still hasn’t asked anything yet. A lot of things must be going through his mind right now… I feel so bad.

“H-hey, it’s- it’s going to be okay.” I mostly say that to myself but I wanted him to feel safe as well.

“I should be the one saying that… Are you okay?” He asks the only question I don’t have the answer to. I was feeling worried, nervous, scared, happy, and angry at the same time. I was feeling all these emotions so, I don’t have the answer to it.

“I-I’m fine.” Honestly, I’m not. I just say that to make him feel at ease.

“If you say so… but! If you need anything, help, someone to talk to, or a hug, I’m here!” He says while smiling. I smile at him in return. I really am grateful for having him here right now. I really need the support and everything. Even just his smile makes me happy.

“Thank you so much. I’m so lucky to have you back~.” I said that a little flirty and he blushed but since I remember the situation we’re in, I brush off those thoughts momentarily.

“Anyway, we should go to their house now. They don’t like to wait.”

“Sure!” After he said that, we stood up and got our things and got prepared to get into the car. I text Kanao to tell her everything that happened and also thanked her for telling us. I knew that guy I saw run into the alley was up to something. I just didn’t know he was up to something of this caliber. I should have stopped him when I had the chance but… I can’t change what already happened. I just have to accept it.

We finished preparing and we also have locked all of our windows and doors because this was probably going to be a long day. We head to the car and went inside it. Tanjiro said that he wants to drive for some reason so I let him. He seemed really eager to do it.

He was in the driver’s seat while I was in the backseat. We decided that the other person should hide so no one else would see us together and possibly spread more gossips about us. I liked how he worried about how I would feel.

In middle school, just after I forgot about Tanjiro, I was this kid that was quiet. I didn’t talk to anyone and there was this accident that I fell on top of someone. Unfortunately, it was a boy. I apologized to him but then the next day, I was getting bullied because someone spread some rumors about me being gay. Before, I didn’t even know what that meant but that word annoyed me so much because I was getting hit, tossed around, getting called by different names, just because of that particular word. I hated that. Just thinking about me makes me want to punch a wall somewhere.

I disregard these thoughts and focus at the problem at hand. We were nearing our destination and I was trying to calm myself. Tanjiro stops the car at the given address and it was like a mansion. It was clean on the outside and it was white. It had the same stairs in the dreams.

“Let’s go?” Tanjiro asks me and im honestly not ready. I was scared right now. That’s the only thing I can verify that im feeling. I don’t like it.

“Sure. Let’s go.” I walk towards the door and I hesitate to open it. I gulped. I try to open the door but someone opened it before me. I look at who it was and it was a maid.

“Hello. We were expecting you. Please do, come in.”

“O-ok… Thank you!” I step in the door and held Tanjiro’s hand tightly. Just before we stepped into the living room. He pulled me towards somewhere.

“Hey, it’s going to be okay. I’m sure they’d understand.” Hearing him say that made me a little bit at ease but it’s still not removing my fear completely.

“Thank you.” I thank him again and move into the living room.

“M-mom? Dad?” I call out as I step into the living room.

“We’ve been waiting. Sit down.” I obey her command and sit down. I also gestured Tanjiro to sit next to me. There was a table dividing my parents to me and Tanjiro. They look so pissed. I gulp and get ready to take it in.

“So? Are you going to explain yourself? You become an idol and now you’re gay? Explain to me now.” I tried to speak but nothing came out. I was trembling.

“Speak! Speak up!!” My dad yells it at me. I speak.

“I-I’m gay! Okay? I wanted to become an idol because it was my lifelong dream!!” I shout it. I wait for a response.

“Ok. Now, who is your boyfriend?”

I pointed at Tanjiro and said “T-this man…”

“Really? It was true.” I let the tears flow out and speak up again.

“I’m sorry!! Please don’t disown me! Please don’t hit me!! Please don’t get mad!!” I don’t wait for a response and just run away.

“H-honey, wait!!” I hear my mom call out to me but I don’t turn back. I just run and run. I head towards the beach nearby. I get it now. It’s complete. Those pristine white stairs are my parents’ stairs to their house. It was the reason why Tanjiro and I got separated in the first place. They worked abroad so I had to come with them. Those stairs were what I last saw when Tanjiro and I last saw each other. It was the place we got separated. The stairs collapsing in the dream meant that we were separated forcefully and it was because of my parents. This is it.

This is the final piece of the past.
