15. Meet Joan and Nick
It annoys me to no end when I read things like:
"Joan is your typical good girl who has perfect grades, average looks, and would much rather curl up with a book than go out to party."
A) Why can't you be original and develop some unique characters that would actually be interesting to read about? Why is everyone always so typical? and B) What do you mean MY typical good girl? Because I'm pretty sure everyone has different definitions of "typical".
Or,
"Nick is your typical bad boy [oh look, there's the word your again] with a dark secret and a mysterious aura and lots of tattoos and is known as the town bad boy and Player Supreme."
Okay, I'm exaggerating. I've yet to read a description as terrible as this. But still, was it really necessary to repeat "bad boy" twice? And why does every bad boy have some sort of deep dark secret?
I'm sure there are tons of nice people named Joan and Nick out there. Give them some credit, yeesh.
Oh, speaking of deep dark secrets. You know what else sucks? When after 20+ chapters of suspense the deep dark secret turns out to be not so deep nor dark. That's always disappointing.
Anyways, the worst is when you get something like this:
"Meet Joan. Joan is your typical good girl who has perfect grades, average looks, etc. etc. Now meet Nick. Nick is your typical bad boy with a dark secret and a mysterious aura etc. etc. Who knows what will happen when these two polar opposites are put together?"
Um...I know, because I've read the exact same story about fifty bajillion times already. Just saying.
