Some of you aren't going to agree with me on this, but hear me out.

Before you click on a hundred random names and hit that "follow" button, think about what you're really trying to do.

I know you're trying to get as many people's attention as possible. They get that notification that you've followed them, they're going to click on your profile, maaaaybe check out your book, and maaaybe even become a loyal fan of your book. Maybe you get equally random [and empty] follow-backs.

Hey, but it's a win-win situation, I hear you say. No body minds a new follower, no matter how random.

Except that you're just an empty number. You follow but make no attempts of engaging with the people you follow. Not even read their work.

Now, if you're guilty of this, it's not a very effective method of gaining meaningful interaction and followers, but I'm not gonna hold it against you. It's slightly annoying but hey, whatever makes you feel as if you've done a proper hard day's worth of work.

But reserved for the deepest trenches of hell are the follow-hundreds-of-people-and-then-unfollow-a-couple-days-later scums of the earth. Just to get that oomph of attention. Maybe get a few random follow-backs, get a few people checking out their work.

And then bam! Unfollow and proceed to follow the next ten-thousand victims.

Who are you fooling. I've got my eyes on you. You're also a mass-spammer and annoying.
