|The Age of Three|

The Fate of Zitao; sealed from the moment he was conceived.

"Tao-ah, please don't cry" a very pretty, but tired-looking woman murmured with a plea, as she bounced the three year old child in her arms,."Your father will be home soon."

Her quiet pleas were of no use; her toddler was burning from fever. The toddle'rs thin strands of hair sticking to his forehead damply. She was worried, for he was burning and sweating.

"Tao-ah, please please please" she says as she hushes him, "He'll be here any minute" her son's crying finally slows, turning to pained little whimpers.

"Shh, baby" she tells him once more, rocking him gently as the front door opens and the heavy footsteps of her husband sound, and the scraping of a chair being pulled back.

"Victoria!" her husband's voice called and she immediately made her way to stand before her husband. He glowered at her before opening his mouth. "Why isn't my dinner on the table? You know I want to eat when I come from work" he hisses accusatorily.

"I-I-I'm s-sorry" she answered meekly, "I-I forget to place it on the table" bowing her head as she moves to the microwave and takes out the plate she had prepared in advance. With her head lowered, she places it before her husband and sits in the seat next to him; running her hands down her son's back who had finally hushed.

"You forgot? You do nothing all day" he snaps as he takes a bite of his food, before scowling. "It's fucking cold Victoria, you can't do anything right, can you?!"

Victoria bits her lips as Zitao stirs in her arms. "Zhoumi please, our Zitao has been crying all day, his temperature is really high; please let me take him to the emergency room." She begs, as she feels the heat from her child on her chest.

Zhoumi stops eating. "And are you going to pay for his medical bills? No, you can't, you are useless, and all you do is laze around the house while I bust my ass off to pay bills."

Victoria cannot understand how cruel Zhoumi could be; Zitao was his son, regardless of being born a carrier; he was still his flesh and blood.

"Zhoumi... I never wanted to be a housewife" Victoria starts. "I have a degree, I'm educated, I could contribute if I had a job" she continues, her voice more firm than it had been in years. "It's you who will not let me earn money, with my degree I could bring in more— "

She never finishes her sentence as her head snaps to the side, and she falls from the chair. Zitao is still in her arms as she sits up and brings a hand to cover her searing cheek. By this time, Zitao is crying at the top of his lungs.
