The red thread of fate is a concept that originated from Chinese mythology. The red thread is said to connect destined lovers, regardless of place, time, or circumstances. It may stretch or tangle, but it will never break.

Hayate Igarashi had thought the idea was ridiculous the first time he had read about it. The idea of a destined person for every individual was ludicrous to him. Soulmates were nothing but a cliché.

If he was not mistaken, he had read about it in a novel once. He had been in high school then. He had heard a group of girls discussing it when he had gone to buy lunch today, which was why he was thinking about it now.

Everything seemed mundane recently. It seemed the routine of his life from the last twenty years would be repeated for the next twenty years.

Hayate was sitting in a lecture hall. He was a second-year law student living in Tokyo, Japan. The lecturer was going on about family law or something. He had lost interest at the beginning of the class.

His eyes drifted away from the board displaying the notes he needed to take down to the window he sat beside. The lecture hall was on the second storey of the law building. Outside he could see a group of people gathering.

It was him.

The crowd was gathering around a specific student. His skin was light, but not pale. His raven hair was grown out past his chin, stopping in the middle of his neck. It suited him.

His name was Touma Kirigaya.

Hayate had never actually spoken to him. He had seen him from afar a couple of times. And all that he knew about this person was what people had told him.

He had heard the following:

Touma Kirigaya was a third-year veterinary science student, making him a year older than Hayate. Girls flocked to him in droves because he pretty much looked like a male model. This Hayate had confirmed to be the truth. He also apparently had a great personality. He was supposed to be nice and funny and so on. This Hayate had no way of confirming without actually talking to Touma. So, he had concluded to stay in the dark. By Hayate's reasoning there was no way a person could be that good looking and have a good personality. It just was not right. God did not love anyone that much.

Take Hayate, for example, he was tall with chestnut brown hair and olive skin. His shoulders were broad, and his eyes were a cool gunmetal grey. His jawline was sharp, and he had a small black mole above the upper left corner of his lips. He was a good-looking man, yes. But he was also a player. He had no interest in a relationship, but he liked sex. He did not see a problem with that. Although the people who expected more than just sex did. Breaking hearts was nothing new to Hayate, though.
