The air outside was cold, for of course, it was winter. Winter, the most brutal season. A time where everyone stayed inside with their fireplaces, their hands gloved so they wouldn't get burned by the hot cocoa. Nobody in their right mind would go outside, which was exactly why Lucile and Jackson met the most during this time. Every other night the two supernaturals would meet in the grove near the west side of the forest and cherish their time together, for it would only last for so long. You see, Lucille was a water nymph, and Jackson was a shapeshifter. The two were madly in love.

It wasn't exactly against the supernatural rule, it was just not something people did, ever. All the kinds of supernaturals had a truce that was made after a war in the 1800s. Pure-blooded supernaturals were supposedly stronger than hybrids, but there was no proof. Each supernatural kind had a rivalry with the other kinds so people thought it was like treason to fall in love with other kinds. Lucille's family was insanely strict about interacting with the other breeds.

Lucille and Jackson could never date in public so they dated in secret. They had a child, a baby girl that was born just two days ago. Nobody had questioned the child since Lucille had many admirers.

The night when Jackson and Lucille met was not as cold as it could have been, but they weren't complaining. The forest was quiet, maybe even too quiet. One in a while a bird shrieked or a squirrel bolted up a tree but other than that it seemed that the two star-crossed lovers were they only thing making a sound.

Then a twig snapped, and another, and another, until both Lucille and Jackson were on their feet. All of a sudden six wolves burst out of the bushes and ran straight at Lucille. Then dark, murky water engulfed Jackson and covered him in a swirling wet bundle. Five water nymphs leaped from the trees and used all their power to sustain the water that held Jackson.

"How dare you! It is just like shapeshifters to trick my daughter into falling in love! You will rue the day you set eyes on her!" One of the water nymphs roared at Jackson. One of the shapeshifters transformed out of wolf form to human with a look of disgust.

"Only a water nymph would do such a thing. You will feel my fury!" The werewolf bellowed. He transformed back into a wolf and lunged at Lucille.

The fighting was brutal. Lucille's dad helped her back to the house but Lucille died three days later from her wounds. Jackson had no help and died in the forest with too much water in his lungs from the water nymphs to breath. Some supernaturals thought that the punishment was fitting, others thought it was cruel. People then started to mingle with other kinds of supernaturals and more hybrids were born.

Then there was the baby. The girl was given to the only family willing to take care of her. This family was one that had thought the death of Lucille and Jackson was cruel and was happy to take care of their child. The girl was treated nicely but every once and a while people would look at her with disgust. When she was finally told why, Melissa decided that she would make people think of hybrids the way they should be thought of, with as much respect as pure-bloods.
