Chapter Thirteen Claire

The silence between us was enough to drive my crazy as we walked toward the school. Mara seemed worried about something and Kathy was squeezing Micheal's hand. Ah, Micheal. From the first time since we got him out of his sell I finally got a good look at him. He had nice features and a well muscled body. Micheal was hot. I scolded myself for thinking about boys while we were on a very important mission. I soon took back my scolding since checking out Micheal gave something to think about instead of how awkward and quiet it was.

Finally after a long 10 minutes, Blaire broke the silence by talking about her old school. In no more than two minutes we were all in an elaborate conversation about PE. The conversation soon turned from PE to everything school-related. Tessa talked about these girls who had sleepovers every other day, Kathy talked about a boy who wore pink socks, and Blaire talked about her old boyfriend who she dumped because he was in love with a piccolo. I didn't have many friends at my old school, but I felt like maybe I could be friends with this group. The way I talked with such ease to everyone and the way they did the same was clear sign of a bond started to go.

For the first time in along way I felt like at had real friends, maybe even best friends, and I could tell a bond was starting to form. I thought that when the time comes, I would protect these people with my life.

The conversation went on for another 5 minutes until Mara changed the subject.

"Guys, for the past couple of minutes I've been smelling weird scent. It might just be a squirrel, but it could also be something else" Mara told us.

A frightened expression swept across Blaire's face and she turned to us all.

"It might just be a squirrel but.....there are some outlaw packs of supernaturals that live in the woods. Some are quite nice, but others are vicious. The ones that are rumored to live in these woods are said to be very mean. Of course, no one alive has seen them. I thought it was just a myth but....what if it's not? Don't be mad at Tess and I, this was the only way to the school without guards and if we told you you might not have wanted to go this way." Blaire blurted out in one big breath. For the first time I heard a hint of a British accent in her voice.

"It's okay Blaire, but we need to get out of these woods as quick as possible" Micheal spoke urgently. Tessa, in the lead, started jogging and everyone else did the same. We stepped into a clearing and Tessa signaled us to stop.

A bush started to rustle and a huge werewolf leaped out. 7 other werewolves jumped out of the bushes and surrounded us. The biggest wolf barked an order at the rest of the pack an the werewolves attacked.

Kathy and Micheal slid out their
vampire fangs and attacked the wolves. Mara transformed into a werewolf and through herself into the fight. Blaire cowered behind Tessa and Tessa snarled as her eyes turned amber. I ran at the nearest wolf, a female, and super-ninja strength kicked in. I kicked the wolf in the snout then kicked it in the stomach which sent it flying. I did that to about 3 other wolves and looked around. More wolves were flooding into the clearing and though some were fleeing we were still wildly outnumbered.

Kathy was kicking wolf buttocks, her fangs bared and her full fury unleashed. Micheal was just as awesome, fighting two wolves at once. I was sure Mara was doing brilliantly but I couldn't spot her in the fray. Tessa was keeping wolves away from Blaire who was sneaking out from behind Tessa. I would have done something then but two wolves lunged at me. I knocked one unconscious but was struggling with the other. More wolves were fleeing and there were only about the first 7 left, along with the leader. We might win this.

Suddenly a scream echoed over the whole battle. Blaire had sneaked away from Tessa and was trying to fight on her own. A large wolf had bitten deep into Blaire's middle and she collapsed on the ground. Tessa through the wolf off of her and ran towards Blaire at full speed. I kicked the wolf that was on me and sent it yapping away. I ran with Tessa till we reached Blaire. Her shirt was a bloody mess and she had her hand clasping it. A pool of blood lay beside her. The wolf came in for the kill but Tessa and I kicked it at a tree.

"Why did you leave, you can't fight." yelled Tessa.

"w-w-w-wanted to h-h-help" Blaire spluttered.

"Your medicine bag, where is it" Tessa cried. Blaire rolled over slightly to reveal a small purse. Tessa rummaged through it till she found what she was looking for.

"w-w-won't do a-any-th-thing, t-t-too d-deep" Blaire removed her hand and sure enough the bite was quite deep.

"We have to try" Tessa whimpered

"Y-you'll was-s-waste it"

Blaire replied. "WE HAVE TO TRY" Tessa screamed. Blaire shook her head. I looked over my shoulder as Kathy was thrown full force into a tree, she landed at a weird angle that showed off a bad (but not Blaire bad) bite. Luckily, Kathy was still breathing. Blaire pointed at Kathy.

"H-h-help h-her" She choked.

"We will help her later but we have to help you now" I sobbed. Tessa started to put the medicine on Blaire's wound but she pushed Tessa's hand away.

I looked at the battle and there weren't many wolves left. Mara and Micheal were fighting the wolves away so we could help Blaire. Blaire's breath grow more scarce and with the last of her energy Blaire spoke, "I'm glad I helped." Blaire closed her eyes and her last breath escaped her.

"No, NO" Tessa whimpered as she shook Blaire. Tessa stopped after a few seconds than we both burst into tears. All the wolves were gone and Mara was leaning into Micheal who was fighting tears. Kathy had propped herself up so she could see what was happening.

Through my sobs, I thought about Blaire's last words. She had wanted to help. She had gotten wounded because she wanted to help us fight, and had refused the medicine because she wanted to help Kathy instead. She did help, but at a deadly cost.
