tw: mentions of blood, nothing too serious but its there

“Dream? What are you doing just standing there?” I asked, slightly startled by his sudden presence. Neither of us seemed phased by the unending void under our feet. Nor did the passing stars pay us any mind as we slowly drifted through space. He did not speak.

I felt myself become uneasy despite his welcoming appearance. He was holding out both of his arms to me as if getting ready for a hug. His green eyes were softer than water lilies and his freckles seemed to pop out more over his pink tinted cheeks. All of this and he still seemed off. It was enough to increase my heart rate and break a sweat at the nape of my neck.

“Dream!” I repeated myself sternly. My voice faltered slightly which wasn’t what I wanted in order to make myself seem assertive. He cracked a smile, a wicked smile at that. He bore sharp, white blades that dripped a crimson liquid. As horrified as I was, I felt paralyzed under his intimidating glare. His eyes were glowing now.

I blinked away my tears and he became a fox. A mischeavous, hissing fox. He chattered tauntingly at me, his eyes floating with the ghosts of lies and blood seeping from his mouth from all the sheep he tricked into trusting him. All I could do was stare at him. Into those piercing emerald eyes that now had a glowing red dot in the middle of his pupils.

My heart raced in my chest as he inched closer to me. His tail flicked in curiosity while he sniffed around my ankles. He stood on his hind legs to inspect my trembling hands. I whimpered in my throat and nothing came through my mouth. Somehow he grew enough to reach my chest, placing a paw with exposed claws that dug into my skin. I hissed just as he did.

“Should’ve gone with your gut, George,” he said but his mouth didn’t move. He plunged his arm into my chest to squeeze my heart and rip it from its cage. It didn’t hurt but I could feel the blood gushing and the hollowness in my ribs. I screamed and cried but nothing could be heard, just tears running from my eyes and my jaw left hanging on its hinges.

Everything began to blur around me and my vision darkened. Once all I could see was black, Dream’s green eyes glowed in the dark. I could hear him snickering at me, shrugging his shoulders, holding his stomach, squinting his eyes, and enjoying every bit of pain he induced in me, albeit not physical. I couldn’t do anything but sit there and take it.

I shot up from my bed in a motion quick enough to give me a headache. I subconsciously clutched my chest just to make sure what it stored was still in its rightful place. While I still very much had my heart, a pain in my chest could not be denied. A cold sweat seemed to run down my whole body despite my overheating skin burning under my clothes.

My lungs struggled to regain my breathing, but once I did I was able to slouch my body against the headrest. It was dark and quiet in my room, the early morning’s blue hue was absent and replaced by the dimness of true night. There weren’t even sirens wailing down the highway nearby per usual, even the low hum of street lights seemed to be quieter. When I turned to my clock again, it read 3:48AM.

Same nightmare. Third night in a row. I seem to wake up earlier each time.

The desire to sleep seemed to leave me in the time I began to take in my surroundings and calm down from the adrenaline rush. I couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling that remained in my mind as I slowly rose from my mattress. Cat was sleeping peacefully in my chair just to the side of my bed, not even batting an eye when I reached down to pat his head.

I felt out of place. I felt like I shouldn’t even be up. Being awake at such an hour by accident felt illegal. My room wasn’t cold but it wasn’t warm. My skin wasn’t burning under my clothes anymore, in fact it seemed to embrace the warmth now. I lazily picked up my pants even though they fell right back below my hips as I made my way to my window.
