AJ sat on the bleachers reading as cheers surround her. She looked up to see that her school's team, the Raiders, had just scored with less than a minute left. They were now one point ahead of their rivals, the Buckaneers. She had just put her book in the bag to see her brother being surrounded by his fellow teammates. Assumming he scored, she filled with pride. She always attended the games even though she never understood the game of soccer. Her brother never cared though, he was just happy she was there for him. She stood and walked over to their designated waiting place.
"Are you here for the Buckaneers?"
AJ laughed and shook her head, "No, why?"
"Well you're wearing their colors."
She looked down, realizing he was right. It wasn't on purpose. She just grabbed the first thing in her drawer as she ran late this morning and Andy, her brother, was rushing her out the door. "I'm here for the Raiders. I go to Reining High."
"Well, I bet I could make you go to the Buckaneers fan base."
AJ rolled her eyes not answering.
"I play for the Buckaneers."
"So?"
"That is usually enough for people to change their minds."
AJ looked up at the guy again, noticing his looks. He was very good looking being about six feet tall with an athletic build and shaved brown hair which made his blue eyes more noticable, but she wasn't falling for it.
"Why didn't you play today?
"Are my crutches not enough reason to not play?" The guy smirked and looked down at her, his eyes shining with amusement.
AJ, just now noticing the crutches, wanted to slap herself in the head. She usually noticed such details, but she didn't want to get caught talking to this guy. Her brother would surely try to pick a fight, especially if he really is on the Buckaneers.
The guy mistaking her silence for curiousity continued, "I sprained my ankle during practice a couple of weeks ago. That probably explains why you guys won today," AJ grinded her teeth. She didn't like him insulting her school's team like that, especially with Andy being the captain."But don't worry sweetheart, I'll be ready to play in the playoffs, and we will be the one's advancing."
Normally, she would hold doubts about a team being cocky, but both teams always made it the playoffs, and the Buckaneers almost always beat the Raiders for the past fifty years.
"So what's your name?"
AJ decided it wouldn't matter so she answered, "AJ, yours?"
"Jason, it's very nice to meet you AJ," Jason smiled and it seemed genuine so AJ gave him a small smile in return. She couldn't help but feel like she shouldn't be talking to him.
"Want to go out?"
She stared at him incredulosuly, wondering if this guy was for real. "I'm waiting on someone."
"Boyfriend?"
"Brother."
"Well then, why the hold up? Just text him and tell him you will meet him later."
"No, thanks." AJ looked around for Andy, not wanting to be caught, but he was still nowhere in sight. They were probably all celebrating in the locker room. "Look, you should probably get going. You won't want my brother to see you talking to me. Trust me."
"Don't worry about me, baby. I'm not scared."
"Cocky much?"
"You have no idea," He was smirking and AJ couldn't help it, she laughed. Jason's smile got bigger realizing it was he who made her laugh.
"Just go out with me just once, and I'll leave you alone if you don't want to go out again."
"I barely even know you."
"So get to know me," Jason handed AJ his phone. "Put your number in my phone." AJ just stared at it, not knowing what to do. But when she saw the Raiders locker room door open, she knew she was out of time.
"Fine," AJ huffed and took the phone to put her number in. She thought of putting the wrong number in, but this guy seemed relentless, and she really needed him to leave. She handed him back the phone and he called it, making her phone ring. He smiled and said, "Talk to you later."
She watched as he crutched away. The bleachers were just about cleared by the time Jason was a safe distance away, and she saw Andy come out of the locker room. Andy made his way over to her, and AJ secretly sniffed the air to make sure he showered before he hugged her.
"Good job!" She exclaimed with as much enthusiasm as she could, and Andy shook his head laughing.
"I know you read the whole time, but thanks," he ruffled her hair as he put his arm over her shoulder and they made their way to their car.
"Yo, Tabets!" AJ and Andy turned around, seeing Andy's teammate, Ricky, running towards them. "Are my favorite twins coming to the party at my house?"
AJ and Andy looked at each other, having one of their silent conversations. "Yeah, we'll be there."
Andy threw his soccer bag in the backseat and climbed into the driver seat. AJ let it go, knowing she would be driving home from the party later. "The whole team is pumped that we beat the Buckaneers. It's really giving them hope for the playoffs. I know that Jason didn't play today, but it's being said his sprained ankle was almost a fracture so he may not be playing one hundred percent this season."
AJ almost choked when he said Jason, and she suddenly remembered how she knew the name. Jason is the captain of the Buckaneers. She didn't recognize him as he had shaggy long hair the last time she saw him, and it was from quite a distance. AJ wanted to dig a hole for herself and stay there for a while, but she knew she couldn't. She would just meet with Jason and call it all off.
AJ knew one thing, she was screwed.
