Song for Chapter: Kids in America by Kim Wilde
Stevie was going to start filming a movie called "Footloose" soon, and she was proud of the role she had gotten, having had to compete against 17 other girls for the role, most of whom were famous. Some of these women had been Brooke Shields, Diane Lane, Michelle Pfeiffer, Lori Loughlin, Meg Ryan, and her new rival Madonna. She was very smug about it, knowing she'd boast about this at her interview tonight with Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." It was her first ever TV interview and she was going to make sure she stood out as different. Different than Madonna. Different than the other actresses in her age group. Different enough to show she was somebody. Competition drove Stevie, and she was not about to let someone think they were better than her because they dressed a certain way.
"Please welcome our guest tonight, rising young actress and starlet, Stevie Costa!", Johnny announced. Stevie walked onto the stage , greeted by everyone's applause. She smiled widely, waving her hand , strutting confidently in her jeans and tank top, having refused to wear a dress. Her combat boots stomped on the stage as she strutted to where Johnny stood shaking his hand firmly before they sat in their respective chairs. "That's quite the grip you got!", he said in surprise. "Well, get used to it. I'll be around more.", Stevie's deep voice smoothly drawled. She smirked as the audience cheered. "So, what a story you got to tell. I mean, oh my God were you amazing in Flashdance.", Johnny exclaimed. "Did you do all those dance stunts?", he asked her. "Yes I did! I actually took dance from when I was 3 until I was 13. My brother Bruce taught me gymnastics when I was 10.", she replied. "Wow, that's incredible. A lot of people were talking about the strip club scene, when the water falls on you.", Johnny mentioned, causing whistles to arise from the audience. Stevie nodded her head with a laugh. "I let myself go when filmin' that. I was like in the zone.". She giggled. "You've got quite the accent there, where are you from?", Johnny took a sip of coffee. "East Rutherford, New Jersey, then we moved to Newark when I was 7. I could take the train to Brooklyn and back without my family knowing.". Stevie chuckled darkly, causing the audience to laugh. "Ahh I see, you're a little troublemaker.", Johnny teased. "So, I also wanted to ask, the tattoos. You aware not many girls have those? That a lot of guys got them, mostly uh...bad boys?", Johnny laughed at his question, but Stevie began to grow annoyed, sitting up straighter as she cocked a brow. "I'm very aware, my friend did 'em for me when I was 15.", she said. "So you're like a bad girl?", he asked. "I mean most girls don't dress like you. Your style from what I've seen on TV and such is like Madonna's.", he continued. "Sure, I'm a bad girl. Bad girls have more fun than church girls.", she arched her brows whilst smirking. "As for the Madonna comment, do you see me wearing fish nets under my clothes? No. Difference between me and her, is I have class. That's why I beat her out for my new movie role 'cuz unfortunately the audition didn't require you to spread your legs. She's fucking white trash.", Stevie growled.
Everyone gasped as soon as the f-bomb came out of her mouth, on live television. Johnny paled up, knowing this was bad. "You realize you just swore young lady?", he seemed to scold. "You realize I don't give a fuck?", Stevie cursed again, laughing in amusement at everyone's shock. "It's a stupid word. You people are soft.", she laughed. "That's what men at roadhouses talk like.", Johnny said as the audience laughed with him. "Spare me that bullshit, I know damn well you talk like I do behind closed doors.", Stevie barked, staring right at him. "Uhm...we'll take a 5 minute break.", he awkwardly announced. The cameras cut before Johnny stood in front of the seated Stevie. "You've got a lot of nerve coming on my show and acting the way you just did.", he growled at her. Stevie stood out of her chair calmly, looking in the older man's eyes. "You don't walk up on me. You're gonna take a step back.", she commanded. Now seeing this could get ugly, Johnny straightened his tie before stepping backwards from her. "You're lucky...SO lucky I'm not throwing you out of here!", he yelled. "Okay.", Stevie scoffed, walking off to the restrooms , lighting up a cigarette as she strutted away.
She puffed cigarette smoke out into the quiet hallway during the commercial break. Great stress reliever, she mused to herself, looking at the small white cylinder in her hand. She heard a cough ; she looked up and was surprised to see Matt. "Hi.", she said. "Not surprised to see you caused the ruckus.", he laughed , standing next to her. "I'm being interviewed after you actually.", he explained. "He's a fucking grouch. What a boomer.", she growled. "Calm down Panther.", he let the nickname he had made for her out. She rolled her eyes "Ya want a puff?", she offered. "Sure.", he took Stevie's cigarette and took a long inhale before blowing out perfect smoke rings. They stood in a comfortable silence, staring ahead into nothing. "If you're free, would you wanna come by tonight before you have to go?", he asked her. "Sure yeah. I beat out your little ex girlfriend for Footloose by the way.", she smugly slipped out. "You beat Diane for that? She's a hell of an actor, good job.", he congratulated Stevie. "You never told me she was hot.", Stevie looked at him with a cocky smile. "If you're thinking of bagging her, you're nuts.", Matt said with wide eyes. Why she was mentioning his ex, he didn't know. All it did was make him worry. "Oh I won't...she acted like I was beneath her anyway. Little tramp.", Stevie drawled out. "Diane ain't no tramp.", Matt gave Stevie a warning look. "You still in love with her? I thought you had that cougar girl you were seeing, the 29 year old?", Stevie cocked a brow quizzically. The 19 year old boy laughed and shook his head. "Nah , I dumped her a week ago. And no, I'm not in love with Diane still. I just know she's classier than a tramp.", Matt explained. Stevie scoffed in annoyance "Whatever." "You jealous?", Matt smirked at her. "Jealous?! HAH! You're delusional Matthew Dillon. Have a good day.", Stevie blew smoke in his face and headed back to finish her interview.
