----------CAL'S POV----------
Mare is jumpy the whole way back. Every twig that snaps, wind blowing through the trees, or even me trying to start a conversation, makes her jump and go on high alert. She doesn't say a single word, her eyes keep darting side to side. We have been walking for a little under an hour in awkward silence. I purposely took her the long way back trying to give her as much time as possible for her to come back to her normal stubborn self. I don't know what that coma did to her, but I want my Mare back.
"Mare, stop," I turned around, making her stop in her tracks, "say something, anything, please."
All she does is look at me with her beautiful brown eyes full of fear and worry. She looks as if she could shatter any moment. Her small body looking smaller than normal, a pale face, and a malnourished frame.
"I am worried for you, not just for you but for everyone else. You can't go into the palace looking like a dead corpse that doesn't speak. You're going to end up being put in a cage because you can't control your lightning. I want you to be able to be a queen, my queen. But no one is going to let you sit on the throne being a red, even worse is people see you as dangerous because you're a newblood. And now with this, there is no hope unless you talk to me." I pleaded.
"You don't trust me do you? You have had a life full of luxury, the only worry you have had is if you will be loved by your country. Well you know what? I have lived my life expecting to die young, in an impossible war. Some days I didn't have food, have you ever gone a day without food? You just don't get it, and I don't think you ever will," she snapped.
I didn't know what to say, so she just started heading back, leaving me at a loss for words. I keep my distance from her as I follow her down. I don't think she knew where she was going, but it didn't bother her. I wanted to so badly stop her, and just scoop her up in my arms and take her farway from all the expectations. Neither of us could do that though, I have a country waiting on me. I can't let Mare consume me, as much as I do want that. But she also has her duties waiting. She still needs to become Queen, if she still wants to. Does she still want to? Does she still want me?
----------MARE'S POV----------
Reality set in this morning. I had to get back, and somehow find it in me to become a Queen. Why did I ever think I could change who I was to become a Queen, just to have Cal? I will have to tell him, but I don't think I have it in me. I still want him, but he is something I can never really have.
"Cal wait!" I shouted and turned around so I could face him.
"Mare what is it?" he asked.
I would have to tell him sooner or later that I was backing out, and I would rather do it in private. "I have to tell you something, please just don't say anything. I can't do it. I can't become your Queen. I have realized that I can never actually have you. I can't give my cause up, I can't go against everything I have worked so hard for, what Shade died for. I want you to know this, I love you. God I love you so much, Cal. I love you enough to say this. Leave me in your past, please. You deserve more than me, more than I can offer. There are so many girls who would kill for you, including myself, but I can't. I love you Cal, but please move on."
I turned away, not giving him a chance to respond, and I ran. I knew he would let me run, because that is just what he will do, until he actually realizes that I was serious. It felt like each word was a stab to my heart, but he can't know that. I will be gone before he gets the chance to say anything to me.
----------CAL'S POV----------
She left me.
She actually left me. Her words stabbed me in the heart. Why would she say she loved me, but then leave me? I felt frozen as I watched her run away, all I did was stand there and watch. I watched as my love of my life turned and ran. Even when I couldn't see her anymore, I was still frozen in place. I finally was able to move my feet, and walk back to the castle, but all I could think was, she left me.
When I finally reached the castle, I asked around if anyone knew where Mare was. Everyone had seen her, but know one knew where she was. I bumped into Julian while I was trying to find Mare.
"It is good to see you," Julian said.
"You too, now by any chance do you know where Mare is?" I asked.
He hesitated for a moment then responded, "Yes, but Cal let me warn you, do not follow her. She needs to do this. She left with Farley, Davidson, and Kilorn on a jet."
"Where is this jet going?" I questioned.
"You have to promise me you won't go after her," he demanded.
"I promise, now where is the jet going?" I asked, getting quite impatient
"Monfort," he said.
