Grip of Hope

We are not destined to find our happy ending,
Our knight in shining armor nor our Prince Charming,
For these moments fade, forfeiting the chance,
To capture the feeling before it turns into a distant memory.

And so our lives become overflowing with doubt,
We are spilling with regret
Dripping with sorrow
And flooding with loss.
They overpower their feelings of happiness.
No matter how hard we try to escape this inevitable

We all try to move on with life
Distracting ourselves from the darkness
Surrounding ourselves with the light
But it becomes tricky when the sun sets each day

You can go about life
Holding a steady grip on hope
Pulling on it as if your life depended on it
But trust me, dear, that grip means nothing
It will do nothing
It will help nothing

This grip you have on hope
Creates an illusion for you to keep going
To keep treading water
But it still doesn't prevent
Destruction from taking over.

You may go about life feeling happy
And free
You may go about life feeling lonely
And sad
Or desperate and deprived
All holding onto hope
With an iron grip

But what does not matter
Is how strong your grip is
But how strong your strength is
for this grip will falter
And your strength will fail

This certainty of life
This inevitable
We are all designed to weaken
But we are not all destined to collapse
Victim to the way life unfolds
