To The Moon and Back

"I love you, daughter,
To the moon and back"

"I love you mother,
Infinity times infinity"

Bedtime stories, fairy tales,
'Ferdinand the Bull' and 'The Kissing Hand'
My childhood in a nutshell.

A quick kiss on the cheek,
As she tucks me in for sleep,
A day's anxiety comes to rest.

From sports game,
To feeling like I'm second place.
This is what we had,
Every single night,
To the moon and back.

Infinity times infinity,
I was told I won,
I loved her more,
A childish race,
An expected love,
Mother and daughter.

The bedtime tales,
Vanished from thought,
Fading memory,
Blown with the wind.

I try to hold on,
The happy moments,
But they are gone.
Forever in the past,
The simple inevitable,
Of life.

And now there is hardly a 'Goodnight',
Or a rehearsed 'I love you',
Mother and daughter,
A forced relationship.

I love her,
I do.
But it's hard when,
You are forced to stay,
And fake a smile.

"I love you, to the moon and back"
Simple words full of misconceptions.
