As Idoka ran, flames began to replace the surrounding clouds of darkness. These flames were strangely enough, blue. They danced towards us, like sleek, bendy serpents. The glacier blue, bellowing, blaze, viciously doubled itself into a herd of galloping flames.
"Idoka, we won't make it to the tower!" I screeched. She did not seem to care. Her face was set, her eyes determined. My life was like a foul stew someone was cooking; The chef always seemed to pile on the artificial and moldy ingredients until the good core of the soup was gone and my life was reduced to complete and utter torture.
Suddenly a tidal wave of water came pouring over the walls of the battlefield, breaking all the barricades with its sheer mass. The deluge splashed onto us, making Idoka tumble over onto the already three-foot-deep water lapping at her ankles. My head slammed into the spine numbingly cold flood. Goose bumps rose on my arms as my waterlogged hair flopped onto my neck. The water had reached my neck as Idoka swam over to me. I just barely saw her gasp before I was submerged in the engulfing tide. Flailing in the water, I had sunk like a stone without my lags. I could not remember if the brain could not function for six seconds or six minutes without oxygen, but I really did not want to find out the hard way. I tilted my face towards the light and saw Idoka swimming gracefully towards me. I wiggled my lags a little in the suffocating water and managed to swim slowly towards her. We got to the surface and I spat out a mouthful of water, the acrid smell of smoke building in my nostrils.
"My goodness you saved me again." I joked staring at Idoka's spluttering face.
"Yes, that is true..." She murmured teasingly. Then she tilted her head sideways, like a confused puppy.
"What is it?" I asked. For a second, she said nothing, and I started to worry that I had done something dreadful.
"Hm, I like your hair down better." She advised reaching a hand around my head and tugging out my messy bun.
"b..."
"I insist, and I just saved your life!" She commanded imperiously. I shook my head, letting my dark hair float on the surface of the water. Staring, at the tranquil façade of water, I saw a dark column of smoke rising beyond my line of vision.
"What are you looking?" Idoka asked, paddling around to look towards the direction I was staring. She let out a gasp, running a hand through her own hair.
"Idoka, I don't think those flames were extinguished." I guessed. Proving my accusation, a herd of flames began to charge over the miles of water. Idoka's lips parted, seeing this phenomenon. "What do we do?" I asked, uselessly smacking the water in frustration. Both of our faces contorted into concentrated suspicion as the wheels in our heads worked tirelessly. "I...I have an idea." I muttered, praying to whatever lazy spirit kept me barely alive. Idoka looked up half excitedly and half surprised. She had always been the best at quick thinking and strategy ware as I was the sort to rush in guns a blazing. "Hey! Why ye given' me that face! If I were dumb, I wouldn't have survived to this point!" I exclaimed defensively.
"I never... hey! never mind what's your plan?" She asked, submerging herself slightly.
"Okay, I have a hunch that if we capture Jinx the flames will, will...die." I started rather lamely. "But I don't know were he would be..." I confided, running a hand across my cheek. We thought for another long minute until I said, "The tower!" Triumphantly answering my own question.
"Oh my gosh! You're a genius! I could kiss you!" She exclaimed, bobbing excitedly in the water. I froze. I almost forgot to keep afloat; my brain was so immobilized. I roller coaster of emotions flooded over me as though a tidal wave of endless feeling was enclosing me. My mind raced back to the present disaster and I gasped shamefully at my own childishness.
