You started your morning as any other. You brushed your teeth, washed your face, did your hair, and the rest of your morning routine. You searched through your closet and end up going with one of the following for the day:

"Hey, listen everyone. We spoke to Judes therapist." Mom said as you Mariana, Callie, Brandon and Jesus started making cereal.

"The good news is there's nothing physically wrong with him." Mama said.

"Okay, so why won't he talk?" Callie asked.

"Um, we're not sure but they think it's called selective mutism." Mom answered. "It's a type of anxiety disorder."

"So he's choosing not to talk?" Mariana asked.

"It's not as simple as that. It's more like a coping mechanism." Mama explained.

"So, what are we supposed to do then?" Brandon asked.

"We all have to be patient and do our best to keep his stress levels down." Mom said.

"We're not gonna make a big deal out of his silence. We're not gonna pressure him to talk. And Jude will keep seeing his therapist." Mama added.

"A lot of good that's gonna do, if he's not talking." Callie sighed.

"There are a lot of different ways to communicate Callie, like Mama said, we'll just act like business as usual..." Mom responded. You cleared your throat noticing Jude walking in.

"Hey buddy!" Mom said looking a bit taken back. "We uh, just..."

"So uh..." Mama started.

"Oh, um, I'm probably going to be late to dinner tonight. We have extra practice all week." Mariana said before the doorbell went off.

"I'll, uh, I'll get that." Mom said heading for the door. "You guys expecting somebody?" You all shook your heads no.

"Well, I'm really proud of you Mariana. You've been working really hard." Mama said.

"Thanks. Apparently I'm working a little too hard. Kaitlyn says my smile is way too big, and I look like I'm teaching Zumba to toddlers at the Y. So, I'm shooting more for a medium smile. Is this a medium smile?" She then showed us the smile to see our feedback. Everyone smiled and laughed.

"Yeah, I guess so." Callie nodded.

"Callie? There's someone at the door for you." Mom said walking back in. Callie then went for the door.

"Who is it?" Mama asked after she left. Mom had then whispered something in Mamas ear ever so casually, probably so that Jude couldn't hear.

"Why do you eat cereal like that?" You asked Jesus as he slurped his milk loudly.
