──⊹⊱ several days later ⊰⊹──
You weren't sure what was worse at this point. Seeing rotten corpses almost everywhere or listening to Levi trying to start a conversation. Having to walk for miles was tormenting enough, but having to walk for miles along with Levi was on a whole other level of torture. It felt as if your ears were about to start bleeding at any moment.
If your feet weren't on the brink of death before, they definitely were now. Mere seconds away from collapsing to the ground, you turned around to face Levi who was walking behind you. "Wanna... take a break?" You asked in between breaths. Even breathing was tiring.
"Thought you'd never ask," Levi said and immediately laid down to catch his breath properly. You hadn't had a single break for over 16 hours. You hadn't even realized how exhausted you had become until you stopped walking.
"Why'd your friend have to go so far? We don't even know for sure if they went this way or not..." You complained, also sitting down on the dirt road.
"You know... I've been thinking about something for a while now." you heard Levi say. "Elaborate."
"How have you survived all this time alone? It's foolish to go solo in a world like this so only an idiot would be alone out here." His words hit hard and though you would never admit it, it was nice to not be alone anymore. But of course, he was right. Only an idiot would choose to go alone.
"I wasn't always alone..." you didn't blame him for mildly offending you, he didn't even know about your now-dead past acquaintances. Actually, he didn't know anything about you or your background. And neither did you. Levi and you hadn't shared any personal information about yourselves yet.
"Oh, I didn't mean to-"
"It's alright." You interrupted. "You didn't know..."
It got quiet for a while. Awkwardly quiet.
"Tch, nevertheless, guess I should say I'm impressed," Levi stated after a while. You looked at him. "Why?"
"I just didn't expect that... from you."
'He did not just...'
"I'm sorry, are you doubting my skills of taking care of myself?" You asked, genuinely insulted. Being underestimated or having your skills doubted was common these days – when you were with other people at least. But was it so unthinkable that a woman could be capable of handling herself? It wasn't hard. Not at all. However, somehow, women were almost always considered 'weak' or 'not able to survive in this world alone and without help from a man' in a situation like this. Annoying, really.
