Chapter Sixteen: Blackout

The storm raged outside, lightning flashing across the sky, and the thunder crashed so hard it threatened to break the windows. Rain was already flooding the alien streets, plunging into the sewers. The water would have drenched them if they hadn't moved fast and gotten a new place to hide minutes ago. Still, the rain was awfully strong, almost as strong as the wind, which was throwing light posts down. The night was violent and freezing.

Rainier relished it. It reminded him that he and everyone else was alive, and right now, he needed that more than anything else.

He needed to take his mind off what the droid... no, Professor Hamil told him a few minutes ago before the assault on the abandoned laboratory.

"Your brother has forbidden alien technology in him, Rainier."

He stood on the top of a building, long condemned and abandoned. He'd had to lead the escape by going underground to the sewers, while half carrying his unconscious twin over his shoulder, but that hadn't taken too long. Now he only had to wait for the rain to stop in order to get moving again or wait until the soldiers wise up and start looking for them again.

He closed his eyes.

He had panicked when Leo convulsed and passed out before his very eyes. Half carrying his twin, he ran towards the laboratory to find Daniel had just finished removing the deactivated tracking device inside the droid's body.

"Dan! Mike! Quick! I need help!" He shouted. "Leo's hurt!"

"Quickly! Put him on the table!" Don ordered as he and the droid cleared the table of the mechanical instruments they used earlier. Rain and Mikey laid Leopard on the table, seeing how pale the Dark Flame Ninja was, making them both become more worried about the situation.

"What happened, Rain?" It was Michael who had spoken while helping Rain lay Leopard on the cot.

"I don't know, Leo and I were just talking when suddenly he passed out." Rainier replied. A thought suddenly came to mind and he glanced at Dan. "Had they started attacking us yet?"

Instead of his brother, Prof. Hamil answered him. "No, but my sensors indicated a strong but low range EMP blast earlier. Thankfully I had made sure this room be shielded from such outside threats or the blast itself would have shorted my sensitive circuitry and caused me to temporary go offline."

Rainier frowned and was about to say something when Daniel suddenly announced.  "That's odd. There seems to be nothing wrong with him." the purple clad ninja began. "No wounds, no signs of being drugged up. Nothing to cause Leopard to lose consciousness. Hell, even those burns got from the laser earlier had already healed."

That seemed to catch the droid's attention. "Let me scan him, Daniel." He began, and started running a diagnostic scanner on Leopard's unconscious form. "Oh my! This is quite interesting!"

Rainier would have asked Hamil what did he found out when an explosion rocked the area, forcing them to evacuate the Laboratory and escape the armed soldiers storming the place, through an underground passageway leading to the city's wide sewage system.

It was only a few minutes ago, after they gotten to the abandoned building that Rainier had gotten the full explanation from Prof. Hamil himself.

"Your brother's situation is very interesting indeed, Rainier. When I scanned his nervous system, I discovered some sort of implant attached to the spinal cord directly connecting to the brain. Not to mention that my scanners also detected some nannites in his bloodstream..."
