Lies. All lies.
Catherine really like him right now. Catherine doesn’t know what to do about it. Catherine certainly shouldn’t kiss him, as much as Catherine wants to.
Catherine needs to stop referring to herself in the third person.
“Catherine loves me,” he speaks the words that I had just entertained. He laughs before continuing. “How about I call you Closet Girl?”
“No.” Hell no, I add mentally.
“SAD Girl?” He offers.
“Not funny.”
He laughs before suddenly stopping. “I know this song. I like this song.”
Funnily enough, for a hip hop-dance track, I knew this song too. Georgie played it on a loop for months a few years ago, so I got to know the song quite well and even hearing the lyrics now, it made me smile.
“Candy? What about Candy instead of Catherine?” Theo asks, referencing the track’s title.
I contemplate the change in name, but hearing him call me Candy is wrong, like I’m a cheap hooker. As much as it gets me all hot and bothered when he calls me by my own name, I love it.
“Shall we just stick to Catherine?” I offer, finally coming to my senses.
“But you said…”
“A girl can change her mind,” I laugh. “Just try to say it less, you know, sexy, ok?”
“Catherine,” he teases my name and I shiver at the sound. “What’s your favorite song?”
“Just one?” I try to think of all the songs I like and then have to pick just one song out of them all. It would be impossible. “I can’t decide. There’s too many.”
“Me too. I don’t know why I even asked the question. Let’s move on.”
I wait for him to think of another question but he doesn’t. Instead I feel him edge closer to me, his arm pulling me towards him as I nestle my head in the crook of his neck. I can’t remember when I last got this close to anyone, let alone felt this comfortable with a stranger.
Whenever I got within touching distance of people I didn’t know, I usually ran away. Theo was the exception, and no matter how often he bridged the gap between us, it felt natural as if we had always been like this.
My heart flutters. “Oh, crap!”
