Flashback: First month at Wellington
WEEK 1: Distrust
The children had made it to Wellington, by luck Duck thought. Aj was low on food and Clem could barely walk, her fingers gone pale blue, her toes the same. It was bad, but they found the place just in time.
Luckily for them a family had set out the other day opening up 5 available spots, but the lady at the gate, Eunice said the baby counted for one.
Clem never let Aj out of her sight, she was extremely protective, identical to a bear watching over it's young. If she even thought something didn't look right she pounced, angry, frantic a ball of pure rage.
Yet she did not speak. She never spoke and Duck had begun to get worried. Had she relapsed or did she just not see a reason to converse?
They were only there for a few hours and in that time both Duck and Clem had been separated for questioning. Clementine held Aj in her arms as she stared up at the nurse lady that had come to get her from Eunice.
Joy was her name, at least that's what her name tag said.
"How long were you in the cold sweetheart?"
No answer.
Clem simply looked at Joy, her eyes gazing as if she was looking through a transparent figure than a living breathing person.
"I cant help if you don't talk to me..." Joy kneeled before the little girl her face holding nothing but concern. She knew no matter what she was going to have to treat Clem for her frostbite, but if the girl was non compliant like she was now the task would prove to be more difficult.
Joy sighed standing back to her feet. "I'm going to get some food for the baby, you stay put." With that the lady left the room leaving Clem and Aj alone.
They hadn't figured out she couldn't hear. More likely they thought she was just ignoring them. She had been stuck since arriving back to the cabin. They found no one there, sure the journey back had proved to be a hard one and it took a few days for them to get back but the last thing she expected was for everyone to be gone.
They left, took all the supplies with them leaving only baby food behind. Naturally they would considering none of them would need it. But they had given up on them, assumed the worst and ditched.
She shut down, had not said a word since then. The only good thing coming out of it was the fact that Clem was able to retrieve her backpack therefore having the picture of Lee back in her possession.
Meanwhile Joy had made her way to the room next door, to the other nurse that held and treated Duck. It was a man, way taller than her, yet rounder, a bit heavy.
