She knew that if they wished to harm, they would have done so already. Charlotte was outnumbered in this case and so she followed them. The Cullen house, entirely shaded by cedar trees, is a large white mansion on the outskirts of town off a hidden roadway, the southern wall is almost entirely made of glass, with a view of the river; and Charlotte was able to make out a steel shutter that she assumed had been installed to protect the Cullens from an attack.
When they arrive at the Cullen house, Charlotte watches curiously as the family enters their home, Edward stood awkwardly at her car. She smiles at him, a small amount of fear coursing through her small body and climbs out of her car. "My father is waiting inside the house," Edward tells her, Charlotte nods, "Let's not keep him waiting any longer," and follows Edward into the house she believes might be a threat to her. He opened the door for Charlotte, watching with a close eye as if she might try and run away at any moment. Charlotte locked eyes with him, smirking as she spoke, "I'm not gonna run, Eddie boy." Edward's face dropped at the new nickname she had made for him.
The inside was even more gorgeous than the exterior. It was very bright, very open,
and very large. The back, south-facing wall had been entirely replaced with glass, and, beyond the shade of the cedars, the lawn stretched bare to the wide river. A massive curving staircase dominated the west side of the room. Charlotte couldn't help herself as they walked up the staircase, but to glide her fingers against the smooth handrail, a small smile appearing on her pale face.
Waiting at the top of the staircase were who Charlotte assumed to be Edward's parents. Charlotte had already met Dr. Cullen before, at the hospital with Bella, and yet couldn't help but be struck again by his youth, the whole families outrageous perfection left Charlotte feeling slightly self-conscious. At his side was a woman, the only member of the coven she had never come across. She had the same pale skin, and stunning features as the rest of them. A heart-shaped face was framed by her billows of soft, caramel-coloured hair. She was small but not as small as Alice, and her curves gave her an older look than those of her 'children'. Esme and Carlisle both smiled in greeting but a small amount of hostility was visible, their stance slightly defensive but still friendly.
"Carlisle and Esme," Edward's voice broke the short silence, "this is Charlotte." The couple smiled warmly at the girl, still unsure of her kind. They were able to detect the lack of a beating heart and yet they could smell blood. Carlisle was more interested in her than threatened, and Esme was excited to meet the girl who Alice had been talking about; not that Charlotte knew about Alice's visions.
"It's nice to see you again, Dr. Cullen." Charlotte's voice was strong as she spoke to the doctor. "Please, call me Carlisle," he insisted. She nodded at him, and watched as the family began to gather in the room. Alice and Jasper stood to the left of their 'parents' whilst Emmett and Rosalie were to the right, watching the interaction carefully.
Esme smiled and stepped forward as well, extending her hand to the demon. Her cold, stone grasp was the same as the cold that Edward radiated next to her in Biology class. "It's very nice to finally meet you," Esme spoke, her voice sounded sincere. Charlotte nodded, her red-hair flowing around her shoulders, "It's lovely to meet you, too."
The family and demon girl had introduced themselves and were now seated in the living room. It was an open space and a gorgeous fireplace was the centre of attention for Charlotte, although no flames were burning, it intrigued her none the less. Small talk had been held by the older members of the family and Charlotte but it was obvious that Carlisle and Esme were concerned about disrespecting the girl with their necessary questions. Emmett cleared his throat, leaning forward on his chair, "What are you?" His bluntness caught Charlotte off guard and her eyes widened at his question.
Charlotte knew that they were vampires but she wasn't aware if they knew about the existence of demons and the Devil himself. She scanned the room, noticing the way nobody was breathing, not even herself. The red-head knew that if her heart could beat, it would be pounding its way out of her rib cage. Edward stiffened at her side and Charlotte wondered why he was staying so close to her.
"Well, my kind aren't really well-known in the supernatural world," she started. "When I was much younger, I died unexpectedly and found myself in a dark alleyway. But to cut a long story short, I'm a demon." Charlotte watched as the families expressions changed dramatically; Alice seemed excited, bouncing in her seat, whilst Edward seemed smug yet she noticed as he slowly moved away from her. Carlisle and Esme's expressions remained neutral and the room settled into an uncomfortable silence.
"Fascinating!" Carlisle's soft, smooth voice broke the silence, drawing her attention to him like a moth to light. "I've only ever met one of your kind before, and I wish it could have been under better circumstances. He didn't seem to like the idea of a vampire not killing humans." Charlotte's eyes lowered to the floor as she began to think about her next move. 'What was she meant to do now? Would they demand that she leave Forks? Are they going to try and kill her?' Edward scoffed from the doorway, shaking his head at her. "Oh right, I forgot that Eddie boy can read my mind," she told the room, watching as Emmett burst out into a fit of laughter, repeating 'Eddie boy' under his breath.
A bouncing Alice ran over to Charlotte, embracing her quickly and planting a small kiss on her cheek. "We're gonna be best friends! I've seen it too!" At the questioning look she received, Alice stage whispered to the demon, "I can see the future." Charlotte nodded at the pixie-girl, "Of course you can." Rosalie and Jasper were the only ones to have not spoken to Charlotte since he arrival and she peered over at them. The crescent moon scares that scattered Jasper's body didn't scare Charlotte but left her wondering his story. He seemed like a protective person, his stance was always directed at Alice, ready to protect her from any threats that might come her way.
Rosalie and Emmett both seemed to compliment each other well as a couple. Charlotte could see in their embrace that they had love and trust. Emmett was supporting Rosalie; as well as holding her back from attacking, should Charlotte's presence introduce a threat. The blonde female continued to stare blankly at the demon. Her eyes showed caution and curiosity. "So," Rose started, "How old are you?" Charlotte chuckled at the looks her family sent to Rose, and she quickly made it clear she took no offence. "No, it's fine. I mean, I can't exactly die. If my body is damaged or destroyed then I'll be sent back to Hell and then eventually come back to Earth." Edward opened his mouth to speak, but Charlotte quickly cut him off. "Don't ask how, because I don't know." Emmett's laughter boomed throughput the room, "Are you sure you can't read minds?" he asked her, slightly serious. Charlotte laughed at his carefree spirit, wondering why she was ever hesitant to meet them.
"I can control the element fire, as well as make it out of thin air," Charlotte demonstrated by forming a small fireball in her hand but immediately put it out, "and I can steal someone's soul." Her eyes turned a pitch black as she faced the coven, which gasped and her eyes slowly faded into their soft chestnut colour.
Then, Charlotte turned to Rosalie, "And to answer your question, I've been around for 547 years..."
