After a long, exhausting day, Frank and Gerard lay in bed together, gazing lovingly into each other's eyes.
"You have no idea how gorgeous you are," Frank murmured, causing Gerard to blush furiously.
"Stop it, I'm not gorgeous," Gerard denied, hiding his face in his pillow.
"You are the most gorgeous human being on this planet," Frank insisted, running his fingers through Gerard's long black hair. "Every time I look at you I'm just in awe at how stunning you are."
"Stop," Gerard whined, blushing even harder.
Frank chuckled. "I'm going to tell you that every day until you agree with me."
Gerard sighed. "You're too good for me."
"No, you're too good for me," Frank argued.
They both fell silent, gazing into each other's eyes again.
"Want me to turn the light off?" Frank asked after a while.
"Okay," Gerard murmured. Frank reached for the lamp on his nightstand and switched it off, plunging the room into darkness.
After a moment of silence, Gerard spoke up. "Frankie, I need you to promise me that you'll hold my hand whenever I'm scared," he said meekly.
"Of course," Frank agreed.
Gerard suddenly gripped Frank's hand. Frank looked around, confused. "What's the matter? What're you scared of, Gee?"
"I...I'm scared that if I let your hand go, you'll disappear," Gerard whispered, so softly that Frank could barely hear him.
Frank felt like someone had punched him in the gut. "Gerard..." he breathed, at a rare loss for words.
"This...this thing we have, it feels so unreal," Gerard went on. "We're in love, we're happy. I don't know how to be happy, Frank. I've never really been happy." Gerard's voice hitched on the last sentence and Frank realized that his boyfriend was crying.
"I love what we have. I love you," Gerard went on, sounding like he was trying hard not to break down sobbing. "And I'm scared that this isn't real. I'm scared that one day I'll wake up and you'll be gone and everything will have just been a dream. I'm scared..." Gerard trailed off as he began to quietly sob.
With his free hand, Frank reached out and gently ran his fingers over Gerard's tear-stained cheek. "Shh, don't cry," he whispered. "Trust me, I know what you mean. Sometimes I can't fall asleep because I'm scared that I made up everything. But when I open my eyes the next morning, you're still there. You're always still there. Just like I'll always be there when you open your eyes each morning."
Gerard sniffled quietly. "Promise?" he asked softly.
"I promise," Frank assured him, squeezing his hand.
After a while, the couple began to drift off, still holding hands as they fell into a peaceful sleep.
