Freddie's dad died in the second week of his final year of high school. That, at the very least, stopped the rumour mill from discussing his sex life for a few weeks. Not that Freddie noticed, he walked around in haze for the first semester.
Everyone told him to take some time off, but time off would have been spent at home and for the first time in a long time Freddie didn't want to be there. He crashed almost every date Aisha and Lydia went on, let Dave get him drunk every weekend, and spent hours studying in the library. He even kept going to to gym, because even though it hurt when he was there he felt like his dad might walk in at any moment.
Lydia called it the lost year, and Freddie privately agreed although out loud he insisted he was fine. He spend so much time studying to avoid thinking that he actually ended up topping his year in the HSC. Everyone figure he was fine. He wasn't.
It was the worst year of Freddie's life but if you asked anyone he went to school with they'd say he was scoring from sympathy. They said the girls who babysat for Freddie's kid sister where his many conquests. They said the older woman he was always seen with was his new girlfriends, she was his aunt. They said Lydia, Aisha and Freddie were in a polyamorous three way relationship, because they wouldn't let him be alone. Freddie gave up arguing, it didn't matter anyway.
Eventually, Freddie found a way forward. He had help from Lydia, and Aisha, and his mum, and a psychologist. The haze started to clear and Freddie grew more and more determined to leave the rumours behind.
