University began to show its true colours as Freddie fell head first into his first major group assignment. Nikki and Freddie were joined by a small shy international student called Fern and the moody girl she sat next to Jade. In the rush to find four students to partner with Nikki headed straight for them because they seemed less intense than the pack eyeing Freddie like a piece of meat from behind.
They actually ended up working well as a team, but they did severely underestimate how much work would be involved in this particular assignment. Deciding to start four days before it was due was arguably a bad idea but when they made it, that seemed like plenty of time to throw together a presentation. They were wrong, there was a surprising amount of work involved in one presentation, so the Sunday before it was due they all buckled down in the Library to try to get through as much as they could before classes interrupted their work. Freddie was as committed as everyone else but he couldn't help checking his phone every so often as a distraction. He could only concentrate on early education language teaching techniques for so many hours before he went completely insane.
Is it too late to quit? Freddie asked Leo.
I know people frown on quitting but we should reconsider that quitting is actually super cool, Freddie added.
So quit, Leo replied with his usual succinctness.
I would but I don't wanna lose access to the sports centre I can't afford gym membership on casual wage.
Use my guest pass, Leo answered.
To be perfectly honest, Freddie had forgotten about Leo's guest pass, but the reminder was enough to push him into action.
Dude! I'm giving it back next time I see you!
No, Leo replied succinctly as always.
Running his hands through his hair in frustration Freddie tried to figure out how to argue the point with someone who didn't seem to want to compromise.
"Are we interrupting something?" Nikki asked drawing Freddie back to reality.
Feeling the shame of three pairs of eyes judging him, Freddie put his phone on do not disturb and went back to work. He didn't check his phone again until he climbed into the car to leave late that afternoon.
It's yours keep it, Leo had sent.
Scrunching his face Freddie decided to let it go. He didn't want the topic to take over and he was tired after a day of trying to sync the schedules of four very different people. He wasn't giving up, he told himself, he was just delaying the argument until after Leo got back and if he refused to see sense Freddie could always give it back to the centre.
