Freddie woke up on Saturday morning to find a text waiting for him from Leo. It was a strange sort of text, one that might have been confusing but it caught Freddie in the moment after waking where everything was still almost a dream so he didn't question it too much.
I wont think you're flirting if you promise to tell me if you ever flirt with me, Leo sent.
Freddie smiled, pulling his phone out of where it was plugged in and rolling onto his back trying to figure out the best way to answer.
I'm kinda dim when it comes to dating but I'll do my best, Freddie sent trying not to over think it. Honesty was the best policy but he added a couple of laughing emoji's to let Leo know he was just playing along with the joke.
Leo replied with another picture of a frog so Freddie figured he didn't screw anything up by getting too personal.
Freddie's honesty seemed to open the floodgates because things got personal again at two AM on Sunday morning. Freddie was woken up by his sister knocking on the door after a nightmare. He let her climb into his bed and while she fell asleep in his arms he happen to catch phone light up with a message.
What if I'm not as good as people think I am? Leo asked.
It was the kind of context free existential thought that people let loose in the early hours of the morning, and Freddie was chuffed Leo had chosen him.
Does it matter? Freddie asked in response.
Why are you awake? Leo asked.
Could ask you the same thing, but seriously does it matter what they think?
Yes, Leo responded quickly.
But does it? Freddie asked again.
Leo sent a question mark.
Taking a breath Freddie decided to reply honestly.
My dad always said that you're gonna be as good as you're gonna be no matter what people say so just do your best because the rest of it it's about them not you.
You're dad's cool.
He was.
Sorry.
It's okay. Go to sleep.
Already half asleep Freddie passed out as soon as he sent the message, the whole thing felt a bit like a dream. The only acknowledgement of the night before on Sunday was a single word from Leo, thanks. It was only one word but it still made Freddie smile. That was becoming a pattern, whenever Leo texted him. Leo always made him smile.
