Lydia and Freddie weren't friends but her mum was a doctor. She wasn't one of Freddie's dad's doctors but she worked at the same hospital. Freddie and Lydia knew each other in the way people who've been forced to interact since they were five do, but that was where the connection ended for the most part.
One day Lydia caught Freddie at the hospital in a weak moment and before he knew what was happening he'd spilled everything to her. That might have been the start of a beautiful friendship for some people but Lydia and Freddie's relationship didn't really change because of that.
It changed because of Dave Moore's unofficial birthday party.
The party was unofficial because Dave had had a parent sanctioned party around his actual birthday. Then unofficially, a month later, when his parents went away for the weekend Dave threw a second unsupervised celebration.
Generally Freddie didn't go to parties, not because he didn't want to but he didn't have the time or the energy. As with everything he kept telling himself he'd do it when his dad got better. But Dave was his best mate so he made the effort. Besides Freddie's parents were so ridiculously enthusiastic he was doing something social that they didn't even call Dave's parents to warn them about the party. That was embarrassing enough to make Freddie think he should try to get out a little bit more.
Freddie turned up at Dave's ready to have a good time but two beers in he snuck upstairs for a short nap. It was just so he could enjoy the rest of the night, that's what he told himself. Twenty minutes was all he needed and he'd be ready to party the night away.
He closed his eyes and he woke up the next morning with Lydia Nguyen sleeping next to him.
